Mixed results for Warragul

-

It was mixed fortunes for the Warragul Warriors in matches against Moe for round three of the Country Basketball League, with the men suffering a narrow loss and the women putting in a dominant performance.

With Shanara Notman (25 points) and Mikaela Dickson (20 points) creating plenty of drive, the Warriors were quick to establish an early buffer before easing to victory in the fnal stages, winning 90-60.

Leading by 16 at the first break, the Warriors were again busy in the second quarter to push the lead out to 33 points before the change of ends.

The Meteors fought hard in the second half, but the damage had been done and they failed to bridge the gap.

Notman, Dickson and Peta Rhodes each scored a pair of three pointers, while Jemma Shaddock also scored a three-pointer.

Each player managed to score in a real team effort, Jasmine Ferguson leading the support to Notman and Dickson with 10 points.

The Warriors women moved to second on the ladder and will test themselves against the undefeated Korumburra Wildcats on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Warriors men couldn’t quite match the slick Moe team in a re-match of last year’s grand final.

The Meteors held a slight edge in the first half, working their way to a nine-point lead.

Moe eged out to a 13-point lead in the third and while the Warriors won the final term, it wasn’t enough to ultimately challenge as they went down 65-54.

Jarrod Castle (19 points) and Dwain Scott (11 points)led the way in a young Warriors team.

Castle, Murray Myers and Sam Flanders each scored a three-pointer.

The Warriors sit second on the ladder behind the Meteors following the loss.

The men will also play the Korumburra Wildcats on Saturday night before hosting the Western Port Steelers at Warragul Leisure Centre on Sunday, with tip off from 1pm.
