Two wins for Neerim bowlers

Neerim District had two wins on Saturday, with division two having a close five-shot win away against Newborough to remain top of the ladder.

Division five secured a big 37-shot win at home against Morwell.

Division two: Neerim District defeated Newborough (2) 97/92.

Peter Throup (skip), Peter Brooks, Gerry Engelstadt and Colin McKay defeated R. Curtis’ team 28/13.

The first four ends were tight, with Neerim leading 3/2. A five on the fifth end gave Neerim a buffer which they built on to lead by nine at the break.

The second half was much the same, with Neerim picking up a five on the 18th and a four on the penultimat­e end to run out winners by 15 shots as “Lady Luck” made a welcome return.

Shane Hogan (skip), Rob Cook, Julie Adams and Karen Sheers lost to J. Cuthbertso­n’s team 18/27.

This was a closely fought match, the result still in the balance with scores 17-all on the 21st. Neerim dropped a six on the 22nd and a three on the 24th to go down by nine shots.

Ray Watts (skip), Jim Fallon, Bill Cook and Greg Bond defeated J. Leicester’s team 28/27.

Neerim dropped five in the first two ends but came back with a four on the third end. This started a run of wins and they led by nine shots after the 10th.

Newborough got back in the game with a six on the 11th and were soon only one shot down. Neerim kicked away again to lead by nine by the 22nd end, only to have Newborough pick up eight shots over the last three ends as Neerim hung on by the narrowest of margins.

Angus McGillivra­y (skip), Neil Adams, Chris Hogan and Steve Halligan lost to R. Goldie’s team 23/25.

In another closely fought game, teams were tied at 13-all at the break.

Neerim built up a five-shot lead by the 21st but dropped fours on the 21st and 23rd ends for Newborough to hit the front. Neerim dropped one on the last end to go down by two shots.

Division five: Neerim District defeated Morwell (4) 91/54.

Tony Thornton (skip), Gerald Winter, George Rymer and Di Tame defeated A. Wells’ team 32/17.

The game was tight with scores level at the sixth end. Morwell kicked away, picking up 10 shots over the next four ends including a five on the ninth end.

The 10th end was the turning point with Neerim coming back strongly and hitting the front on the 17th. They never looked back, winning 12 of the last 15 ends.

Russell Meehan (skip), Jim Schroeder, Kay Cousins and John Rochford lost to P. McNeil’s team 24/19.

Scoring was tight early and Neerim led 9/8 after the 13th. Morwell built up a six-shot lead, only for Neerim to come back and lead by one at the 21st end.

Morwell picked up a five and a three. Neerim won the last two ends but went down.

Bruce Mironow (skip), Tom Goodwin, Thelma Schroeder and Neville Cousins defeated M. Curtis’ team 40/13.

The game was tight early with scores sevenall on the seventh end. Neerim got down to work and won 13 of the remaining 18 ends, picking up large numbers of fours and threes along the way. They ran out impressive winners.

Neerim District performed admirably against a powerful Drouin team in midweek pennant but had a 20-shot loss.

Neerim’s tough draw to date has included four of the top five sides and, after the round four performanc­e, Neerim can be optimistic of getting some wins under their belt soon.

Division one: Neerim District lost to Drouin 44/64.

Pat Fraser-Aurisch (skip), Liz Hodge, Steve Halligan and Neville Cousins lost to M. Leighton’s team 12/21.

Neerim was very competitiv­e early with scores 11/10 on the 14th. The strength of Drouin showed through as they won six of the last seven ends to run out winners by nine shots.

Karen Sheers (skip), Cookie Halligan, Marion Willis and John Rochford beat D. Hamilton’s team 20/18.

Neerim got off to a good start, winning the first four ends to lead 6/0. Disaster on the fifth end saw Neerim drop a seven and soon after were down 6/10.

Neerim won the next eight ends and lead a stunned Drouin 20/10. Drouin won the final six ends but fell short by two shots.

Thelma Schroeder (skip), Di Tame, Kay Cousins and Gerry Engelstadt lost to S. Atkinson’s team 12/25.

Neerim got off to a good start and, after eight ends, were leading 7/3. Drouin got down to work, winning 10 of the next 13 ends.

Neerim picked up a three on the last end but went down by 13 shots in an encouragin­g performanc­e.
