Division 2

- By Joel Batson

Iona 174 defeated Longwarry 150 Iona has made it two close wins on the trot, holding on to defeat Longwarry by 24-runs at home.

Defending 174, the Swamp Tigers were able to reduce Longwarry to 4-41 as Wade Haysom (3-35) and Shannon Hayhow (2-25) ran rampant with the new ball.

Austin Van Strijp continued his fine match for the Crows shortly after this, as he was joined by Dom Pullen (27) and the pair gave their side hope for victory, pushing the score to 107.

However Kieran Lenders (3-27) turned the match on its head with a fantastic spell as Longwarry collapsed, as Van Strijp (56) couldn’t quite pull off the heroics required with the Crows falling to 150 all out.

Fairlie good chase

Warragul 8/251cc defeated by Drouin 5/280 Any hope of Warragul pulling off consecutive victories for the first time in two years was brutally put to bed by Rhys Fairlie, as he and the rest of the Drouin batting order made the Gulls total of 251 seem tiny.

Fairlie combined with David Sharpe (20) and Bailey Osseweyer (18) early to give the Hawks a solid start against the probing bowling of Jack Buckingham (2-51), before unleashing on the Warragul change bowlers.

Justin Vanderzalm (33) and Fairlie combined for a quick-fire 122-run partnership, before Wade Crawford (40*) saw his side home before the tea break.

Fairlie ended up falling just 29 short of victory, however his boundary-laden 141 before tea was undoubtedly the catalyst for such a crushing victory- with his dismissal at the hands of Nathan Macfarlane (2-49) putting the Gulls out of their misery as he seemed destined for a potential double-century.

The match was ultimately ended at tea, with Drouin finishing on 5-280 off 40 overs and, in turn, showing the competition that they are potentially the team to beat.
