Iona fall in over 60s cricket

-

The rub of the green didn’t fall the way of Iona during their over 60s match against Casey-Endeavour Hills.

Iona batted first and lost early wickets through amazing circumstances and brilliant catches.

Russ Ferguson went first after the ball trickled onto the stumps from his leg.

StanHellings was run out backing up when the bowler dropped a caught and bowled chance, only to see the ball spill onto the wicket.

The rot continued with tight bowling and great catches, including a spectacular onehanded catch.

New player Tony Wyatt, who was playing his first game in 20 years, was welcomed to the crease by the combine’s captain in a nice gesture.

After 40 overs Iona had limped to 69 all out, with two withdrawals due to injury not helping the cause.

Sundries top scored with 12 and Wyatt made 11.

After lunch the combine batted and although outclassed, Iona bowled and fielded manfully. After the 40 overs the combine were 5/168. Iona wicket takers were Peter Felstead (1/20), Fred Franks (1/20), Tony Wyatt (1/22) and Jon M,artindale (1/25) with one run out.

Iona’s player of the match was Tony Wyatt for his 11 runs, a wicket and a catch.

Iona travels to Churchill next Sunday to take on the Gippsland Goannas on a turf wicket.
