Market needs people

-

The Rokeby market committee hopes renewed interest in the market will help it continue running into next year.

The market has been running for more than 40 years, and the committee hope some new people or group may join it to help carry the market forward.

Rokeby market committee president Jeff Moody said the market had started in the mid1970s after the hall had been condemned.

“We started off with a handful of stalls and raised funds to fix the hall,” he said.

“From there, due to the commitment of past committee members it has gone from strength to strength, and we now have about 110 stalls.

“If it wasn’t for the initial market committee, we wouldn’t have the facilities we have now.

“We’ve been helped along by grants from the shire, but all funds from the market have gone into improving the hall and surrounds.”

The Rokeby market runs on the second Saturday of the month, with markets scheduled for March, April and May ahead of an annual meeting in June, where it is hoped to form a committee to allow the market to return in September.

Mr Moody said he encouraged people to come out to the market.

“It’s good for the community and it’s a good opportunity to get out, with the rail trail to Crossover also nearby,” he said.

“We just want to get the awareness out there.

“The committee and volunteers make it a great place to come and visit.

“It’s the hard work of the past that has helped it become what it has today.”
