Summer snow an omen?
Mount Baw Baw Alpine resort is hoping snow fall last Wednesday will be a good omen for the winter season ahead.
While no snow ultimately settled on the ground, the resort experienced snow flurries throughout the day with thick snowflakes falling at times.
A spokesman for the resort said while snow did occasionally fall at this time of year, it was a rare occurrence.
“Being a southern resort, the wind does come from the Antarctic, so we are the ones to get it (at this time of year),” he said.
“But we haven’t had it happen for a couple of years now.
“We’re hoping it’s a pretty good omen for the season ahead.”
It came as Mount Baw Baw had a cold snap of weather on Wednesday, with temperatures as low as -5 at 8.10am and hovering around two degree Celsius for much of the day and into the night. The apparent temperature hit a low of -7.9, also at 8.10am.
Warragul’s weather was also significantly cooler than normal for this time of year, with temperatures hovering in the low to mid-teens for much of Wednesday before reaching a daily maximum of 17.5 at 5pm. The temperature had dropped below 10 overnight.
While temperatures reached slightly below one degree on Thursday morning, any hopes of some snowfall to mark Valentine’s day subsided as temperatures returned to the early teens ahead of warmer weather over the weekend, where maximum temperatures reached early to mid 20s.
