WDCA begins Country Week

Warragul District Cricket Associatio­n were on rtack for victory in its opening match of Country Week against Seymour District as the Gazette went to print yesterday.

The Wild Dogs put in a discipline­d effort with the ball at Victoria Park in Kew, dismissing the Seymour side for just 128 in 45 overs.

Kasey Duncan held the innings together for Seymour, being second last batsman out for 62 having opened the innings.

He received little support, with Leigh Irving grinding it out for 26 from 54 balls for the only other meaningful contributi­on.

Wickets were shared for the Wild Dogs, with new ball bowlers Troy Lehman (3/22) and Sam Batson (2/28) putting pressure on from the outset.

Nuwan Perera (2/23 from 10 overs), James Williams (2/13) and Hussain Ali (1/12)maintained the pressure.

All-rounder Max Kelly was economical on country week debut, returning figures of 0/13 from five overs.

At time of going to print the Wild Dogs were 0/19 from five overs in reply with Ben Spicer (11) and Jack Armour (8) at the crease.

With Jindivick all-rounder Hussain Ali coming in at number nine in a strong batting line up, the Wild Dogs were favoured to finish the job from there.

The WDCA are competing in division three, with matches to follow against Hamilton District and South West before semi finals on Thursday. The final will follow on Friday. Norm Berry is coaching the WDCA side with Fraser Duncan, Sam Batson and Jack Armour forming the leadership group. Draw: Today: v Hamilton District at Gordon Barnard Reserve west oval, Balwyn North.

Tomorrow: v South West at Mount Waverly Reserve.

Thursday: Semi finals at Hogans Rd Reserve, Hoppers Crossing. Friday: Final at Brighton Beach oval.
