Mental health boost
West Gippsland Healthcare Group will receive $42,000 to provide additional counselling programs for fire affected families.
The state government last week announced a $300,000 funding package for mental health programs to support people reeling from the trauma of fire or the retriggering of events.
Latrobe Community Health Service will receive $50,000 for counselling and services for children including art therapy and outreach to schools; and, Lifeline Gippsland will receive $50,000 for community engagement and connecting communities in affected areas.
Parliamentary Secretary for mental health and Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said the immediate crisis left by the bushfires might be over, but that was often when people needed support the most.
“We’re standing with people affected by fires – both now, and into the future,” she said.
Residents affected by bushfires can access a case support worker by contacting their local council, visiting a recovery centre or calling 1800 560 760.
Mental Health Minister Martin Foley said the government was standing with Gippsland locals affected by the recent fires.
“This funding will help provide the support they need to deal with what has been an extremely challenging period for many families.”
“If you or a loved one need support, talk to friends and family, a GP, call Lifeline or talk to one of our dedicated case support service workers,” he said.
