Fundraiser for fire victims

-

The Garfield Community Shop has organised an op shop fashion parade on May 11.

The parade, which will feature many fashions from the 70s and 80s in both summer and winter styles will be held at the Garfield Community Hall at 6pm.

The event is a fundraiser for the Bunyip State Park fire relief.

A highlight of the evening will be a silent auction where items such as a boat have been listed.

Items are being accepted for the silent auction.

Funds raised will go toward providing vouchers for bushfire victims who need to replace tools.

One of the organisers Pam Cunningham said many people had lost uninsured sheds and many tools.

The fundraiser is aimed at replacing some of those tools as people try to restore their properties.

Mrs Cunningham said they had been in touch with the Tonimbuk Relief Centre organisers who said many people needed to replace tools.

When we have organised the funds from this event we’ll provide tool vouchers or those people, she said.

Tickets are $30 each with finger food provided. There will be drinks at bar prices.

Tickets can be pre purchased at the Garfield Community Shop or the Garfield Post Office.

The Friends of Garfield group has donated funds to Garfield Primary School for a new roof on a cottage at the school known as Clever Cottage.

The group raised the funds from two antique fairs held in Garfield.

The cottage at the school is of historical significance, not only to the school but to the residents of Garfield.

The windows in the cottage are the original windows from the school. A door, mantlepiece and chimney also have been retained.

The bricks in the chimney are hand made clay bricks from Jeffersons Brick Works in Garfield.

Last month representatives of the friends group presented a cheque for m$2500 for a new roof for the cottage.
