Cobras prevail in thriller

-

Cora Lynn turned the tables on arch rival Inverloch-Kongwak in a hard-fought game that could have gone either way.

The win takes the Cobras to outright second on the ladder while the Sea Eagles slip to third.

The past three encounters between the clubs have been decided by a single goal.

This time the Cobras struck early and led by three goals at quarter time but the Sea Eagles had pegged the difference by half time, keeping the Cobras to a single point for the quarter.

The third quarter was an arm wrestle with the momentum changing several times.

It wasn’t until the final quarter that the Cobras really stamped their mark on the game.

With the ball in their forward half for most of the quarter, they scored a couple of extra goals for a final scoreline of 10-12 (72) to 9-5 (59).

Mitch Wallace at fullback was outstanding for Cora Lynn. He was rarely beaten one on one and his follow-up work around the ground was superb.

Chris Johnson, one of the best midfielders in the competition, impressed once again with his consistency and his ability to win the ball at stoppages.

Billy Thomas rucked the whole day and was dominant with his hit-outs to advantage.

Jeremy Monkton returned from a week off full of running and provided plenty of cover out on the wing.

Coach David Main was pleased with the win against a classy side.

“We knew it was going to be a tough challenge. It’s great to see we’re starting to be a bit more consistent coming up against them.”

However, he said there were definitely areas for improvement. “We missed a lot of easy set shots on Saturday. “We should have kicked away. We need to stop sides from getting back into the game when we’re up.”

Cora Lynn won’t be taking it easy against the lowly ranked Warragul Industrials this weekend.

“If guys are injured they won’t play; we need to field our best side week on week,” Main said.

“The Industrials play a defensive brand of footy. Their strength is strangling opposition sides from scoring. Our strength is our forward line. So it’s going to be a big test for us.”
