Yarragon fights for its second victory

-

Yarragon chalked up its second win since joining the EDFL this year with a hard-fought victory at home over Buln Buln.

The Panthers kept Buln scoreless in the final term that started with the visitors’ noses in front by three points.

Yarragon’s 2-4 for the quarter saw it take the points 8-8 to 6-7.

The absence of Buln’s best player and dominant ruckman Matt Gray was a big an unexpected loss after he’d been the key to the side winning the previous week.

And he’ll be missing for a few more weeks after coming down during the week with appendicitis.

But that shouldn’t be an excuse and detract from what was a gutsy win by the Panthers.

They really showed their mettle in the tough going in the last quarter as the tiring conditions started to take a toll on players on both sides. The contest was close all day. Yarragon’s four goals to two opening term provided a handy buffer.

Buln Buln came back strongly and at half time led by one behind 6-3 to 6-2.

Intermittent rain showers, including a couple that were heavy, saw the teams slog out a third term that produced little movement on the scoreboard.

The Lyrebirds added four behinds for the quarter, Yarragon two.

The game was up for grabs as it headed it the final stage, Yarragon the one that seized the initiative.

All players battled hard throughout a keen contest that kept the spectators interested until the dying minutes.

Paul Harvey put in a big four quarter effort in conditions not totally to his advantage to be named Yarragon’s best.

Mitch Jolly with three goals that had to be hard-earned was not far behind him and Donovan Pell, Darcy Jones, Trent Gleisner and Brad Wolfe all were key players.

For Buln there was none better than Luke O’Brien.

He received some good support from Trent Baker, Charlie Park, Jake Herbel, Jake Pierrehumbert and Jack Symers.

Hayden Baker, with two, was the Lyrebirds only multiple goal scorer.
