Robyn Roulston - Headway Gippsland

-

Robyn is a valuable volunteer at Headway Gippsland Warragul Social Support Group.

To celebrate National Volunteers week, the members of the program interviewed Robyn about her volunteer work and provided her with feedback on her involvement with the weekly Friday social group

Group - How do you like volunteering?

Robyn – I enjoy the laughs. I can be myself at the group, its lots of fun – I wouldn’t come otherwise!

Group – Why did you start volunteering?

Robyn – I started as a student completing my placement hours in early 2017.

I enjoyed it so much that I have kept coming ever since!

I have since started some casual work and I often wish this wasn’t on a Friday so I could come more often – I’m missing out on all the fun!

Group – What are some of your memorable moments with the group?

Robyn – I loved the day we made salt dough and everyone was really busy making decorations and keepsakes.

I also really enjoyed the day at the Greyhound races – and we were the lucky winners of the day, so we received some much needed funds to support our group activities, how lucky are we and what an enjoyable day.

Group – Why should people think about becoming a volunteer?

Robyn – During my time here I have learnt a lot about acquired brain injury and people, really.

I have learnt things I did not previously know about or wasn’t aware of - I have a different outlook on life now and have expanded my expectations. I have learnt so much from everyone here. I have listened to your stories and made great new friendships.

You don’t have to commit every week, any time would be gratefully accepted.

Its not scary to give of your time, don’t let intimidation or the unknown get the better of you. I really get a lot out of my time here with you all.

Group – Robyn, we would all like to give you some feedback on yourself.

We should probably tell you this more often, but here it is in black and white:

“Since being here, you’re doing a marvellous job.” “She’s my favourite.” “She does a good job, is clever with crafts, shares her knowledge.” “She has made a difference to the group.” “Robyn needs no direction, she jumps right in.” “Please don’t leave the group.” “Robyn is enthusiastic, has a great sense of humour and a wicked laugh.” “Thank you so much” “Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain loving one another.”
