Falls camping ground closed for the winter

-

The recently upgraded Toorongo Falls camping area has proved so popular that it needs some time to recover over winter.

Forest Fire Management Victoria’s Latrobe District Manager, Jean-Marc Porigneaux said the site has had heavy use over summer and autumn, which has caused some damage.

“There’s been loss of grass, compaction of soil and digging up and subsidence of some areas resulting in some significant bare and muddy areas,” Mr Porigneaux said.

“This means the site is currently not good for camping on, either for campers or for the ground itself.

“Unfortunately we’ve also seen some vandalism of the site, with axes taken to the new timber bollards, fence posts pulled out and holes dug for fires, despite all the new designated fire pits across the site.

“The whole site will be re-seeded and repaired and then allowed to rest.

“Vandalised infrastructure will be repaired or replaced, and crews will also complete some finishing touches to Campground One.

“Works to Campground Two will also be completed and both sites will be rested and opened in spring, probably by Melbourne Cup weekend.

“Access to the day visitor area, walking tracks and the falls will remain open.

“Resting the site will ensure that it’s recovered and ready for the peak camping season towards the end of the year and into next year,” Mr Porigneaux said.

Alternative camping is available nearby at Poplars Reserve, Checking Station, Latrobe River Picnic and Camping Area. Or you could venture further east to the beautiful forests and parks of central and east Gippsland.
