Frost, dew, sunshine for juniors

Frost at some grounds and heavy dew made conditions tough for the early games in last Saturday’s round four in the Warragul and District Junior Football League.

Yarragon and Warragul Blues played their matches on Sunday. CALDERMEAD­E v WARRANOR Under 10 A frosty start to the day at Catani made for very slippery conditions. Warranor started strongly. There was some great ball work by both teams but the scoring end was with Warranor.

Cannons lifted in the 2nd quarter kicking two quick goals to put themselves in the game.

It was a great last half by both teams that fought well all game to get the ball with Warranor coming out winners on the day. Under 12 The frost was still around for the start with Warranor kicking the first goal despite some great defensive play from Caldermead­e.

Both teams were hungry for the ball and to get the win but at the final siren it was Warranor in front.

Caldermead­e’s Rhys Humphry played his 50th game. Under 14 Perfect conditions for this game saw both teams go head to head but the first half went to Warranor.

Caldermead­e had a strong third quarter to make a contest but Warranor’s experience showed taking them to a good win.

NEERIM DISTRICT v DROUIN GOLD Under 10 Fantastic conditions made for a great game of football.

Neerim was on from the first bounce keeping Drouin Gold goalless until the last quarter.

Both teams attacked the football laying some strong tackles and breaking through the packs.

Gold came home strongly kicking two goals to Neerim’s one in the last quarter and although the Cats were inaccurate kicking 10 behinds, still managed a solid win. Under 12 Beautiful morning South.

Drouin got off to a strong start with Neerim South coming back into the contest.

Drouin’s fine last quarter saw them take the win.

Neerim’s Leo Slattery played his 50th game. Under 14 Excellent conditions greeted the to kick off the Under 14 clash between Neerim District and Drouin Gold.

Both sides started strong with Drouin reading the ball well out of the centre as Neerim fought hard to get their first goals on the board. Drouin linked up well throughout to come out winners.

Neerim’s Sam Ladd played his 100th game. Bonner in Neerim COLTS v HALLORA Under 10 A very cold and dewy morning to start at Eastern Park.

It was a hard fought match between two determined teams, both working very hard at getting a score on the board. Hallora applied great pressure but Colts showed some great football to score well and come away with the win. Under 12 A sensationa­l game of football in which Hallora dominated with its tackles and defensive pressure.

Colts players also made some hard tackles but were unable to come away with the win. Under 14 In bright sunshine Colts and Hallora sprinted out onto Eastern Park to battle it out.

The crowd was treated to a brilliant game.

Hallora’s defence was tough keeping the pressure on all game and the team kicked accurately when it had the ball in the forward line but it was the Colts that banked their points to take the win. LONGWARRY v THE BULLS Under 10 With both sides having good numbers there was plenty of kids on the ground.

It was a great game with some fantastic end to end passages of play.

Both sides had plenty of football in their forward lines with The Bulls able to score a few more times for the win. It was great team football by both sides. Under 12 Both teams enjoyed the good conditions to play some great football.

The Bulls were physically beaten on the day but they fought hard for whole game in which Longwarry came out convincing winners by 42 points. Under 14 In a tough first quarter The Bulls had a one goal advantage at the first break.

The second quarter was mostly played in Longwarry’s forward line with scores almost even at half time before Longwarry then turned up its play in the second half.

In a low scoring contest Longwarry came away with the win. GARFIELD v BULN BULN Under 10 It was also a frosty morning at Garfield but it didn’t stop Buln Buln kicking goals for an early lead.

In the 3rd quarter Garfield kicked into gear pushing the ball forward, holding it there for most of the term and kicked a quick goal.

However Buln Buln replied quickly to seal the result.

Garfield’s Harvey Osborne played his 50th game. Under 12 The sun warmed conditions for the Under 12 match that was close from the start with both teams displaying intensity and excellent tackling skills. The game remained close with the ball distribute­d evenly across both ends.

A couple of quick goals in the third quarter saw Garfield sneak an eightpoint win.

Garfield’s Kai Kelsey, Darcy Grimstead, Joachim Hayward played their 50th games Under 14 In a “ripper” game both teams applied pressure throughout with Garfield marginally in the lead all day in a close, low scoring game.

Garfield was able to stretch its lead in the 3rd quarter and held onto that until the final siren. BUNYIP v ELLINBANK Under 10 It was an even contest between two enthusiast­ic teams.

Some good skills were on display and some great contests kept the match tight.

A couple of quick goals to Bunyip in the 3rd quarter were enough for them to hold on for the win. Under 12 A great effort was put in by both sides with Ellinbank coming out on top in an impressive display.

Ellinbank’s clean and skilful play was the difference between the sides although Bunyip fought hard into the last quarter. Under 14 A good battle was had by both teams in ther perfect weather conditions. Ellinbank got on the board first but some brave ball use by Bunyip got them back in the game.

In the second half Ellinbank had to defend well as Bunyip’s work rate was up and about but Ellinbank were able to kick straighter and took home the win.

Bunyip’s Brock Davis played his 100th game and Axle Bern played his 50th. YARRAGON BLUES Under 10 An honourable effort by a young Yarragon side against a strong Blues outfit.

Yarragon fought hard all game keeping the Blues to only three goals. There was solid effort and teamwork by Yarragon’s backline and both sides moved the ball very well and applied plenty of strong tackling. Under 12 Yarragon came out all guns blazing and dominated the early stages.

Blues started to win more of the ball in the second quarter and held a handy lead at half time.

The third quarter was the Blues best and saw them hold a strong lead at the final change despite the good contest put up by Yarragon.

Yarragon’s Matthew Armstrong and Blues’ Noah McDonald played their 50th games. Under 14 A solid performanc­e by both teams despite the Warragul Blues leading the game.

The scoreboard definitely didn’t reflect the contest, but Warragul Blues ran away with both the score and the win.

DROUIN MAROON had the bye. v WARRAGUL
