Lyrebirds triumph in a crucial win

- By Will Watson Buln Buln triumphed over Lang Lang on Saturday, winning by 25 points in crucial win for the Lyrebirds.

The result means Buln Buln jumps into spot number five on the ladder. They had been sitting in eighth place. Four goals one to the Lyrebirds in the opening term put Buln Buln on track. Lang Lang kicked to goals and two.

The Lyrebirds’ sharpshooters up front worked their magic in the second term, with eight goals and three behinds. The Tigers added to their tally, putting two majors and a behind on the scoreboard. After the main break, it became clear there was no coming back for Lang Lang.

The Tigers managed to slip another major through the Lyrebirds’ defence but could not manage to turn the tide. The quarter finished 5.6.36 to 10.4.64. But the Tigers were not going to let their visitors off lightly. A four-goal rally in the final term saw them walk away with a final score of 61.

Unfortunately for the Lyrebirds, those efforts were not enough to account for the Lyrebirds three goals four in the fourth quarter, which brought their final tally to 86. Trent Baker was Buln Buln’s best man. Matthew Gray, Jake Pierrehumbert, Luke O’Brien and Charlie Park also received honourable mentions. Hayden Baker and Sam Langford led their side’s goal kicking with three majors each. Charlie Park and Jake Pierrehumbert had two each.

Those efforts were backed up by Brandon Allen, Jack Symes and Bryce Monahan who each added a major to the Lyrebirds final scoreline. For the home side it was Thomas Mitchell who ruled the day. Rhys Simmons, Brock Duggan, Will Mcgindle and Clint Fulton also put in impressive performances. Fulton led the day in the goal kicking three of the Tigers’ nine goals came off his boot. Will Mcgindle’s boot added two. Trent Kitchin also walked away with two majors and there were single-goal efforts from Troy McPherson and Joshua Brown.

Lang Lang remain on the bottom after the weekend. They have not won a game all season. They will look to rectify that this Saturday when they take on the Magpies at Poowong. Buln Buln play Catani at home.

Nyora in top four It was a disappointing result for Catani on Saturday, going down by 46 points to Nyora at home.

Nyora had the upper hand from the first quarter, managing four goals three. Catani put fourteen points on the scoreboard two goals and two behinds. The pace continued in the second quarter. Three goals to the Saints and three from the Blues brought the scoreline to 49 and 34 points respectively. It was a solid response from Catani to stem some of the bleeding.

But the game was won in the third term. The Saints kept their hosts scoreless for the entire quarter, while NyoraÕs front line kicked four majors. It could have been worse for the Blues with Nyora missing the main sticks several times in that quarter, ending the term with an additional eight behinds. An extra three majors and three points in the final term saw Catani finish the day with 8.7.55. Nyora maintained their pace and put another three goals on the scoreboard before the final whistle sounded.

It was Catani’s younger cohort that stepped up for their side on the day with Mitchell Gregson, Liam Adams, Lachlan Grant, Dylan Williams and Lachlan Pratt receiving honourable mentions. Lachlan Pratt made his 2019 senior side debut on-ball on the Saturday after an extended period in the reserves

. Daniel Barrand was best on ground for the Blues. He also topped the goal kicking count, slotting two majors past Nyora defenders. DanielÕs brother Matthew Barrand joined his brother Daniel in adding to the numbers on Catan’s side of the scoreboard, kicking one major. Cody Banbury, Tom Keily, Paul Pattison, Nathan Visser and Ryan Lowe also kicked one each. Rhys Bancroft’s efforts saw him walk away with best on ground for Nyora. He was backed up by the efforts of Benjamin Shultz, Christopher Hodges, Ilan Osman, Ben Miller and Matt Miller. Benjamin Shultz was in form on Saturday and led the Saints goal kicking count with four. Ilan Osman was not far behind with three majors to his name. Christopher Hodges and Taylar Gard walked away with two each while Matt Miller, Brad Arnold and Jesse Heylen kicked a major each.

This win plus a loss from Ellinbank now puts Nyora inside the top four on the ladder. Catani drop a place, landing in the eighth spot. Nyora play the Ellinbank Eagles at home next week while Catani will travel to take on the Lyrebirds.
