Emphatic win to Poowong

-

Poowong enjoyed an emphatic win over Lang Lang on Saturday. The Tigers went down by 42 points playing away in Magpies territory.

The first quarter saw the Pies best the visitors by a goal, with 2.3-15 to 1.3-9 the scoreline. It was the second quarter that saw the Magpies really open up the scoring.

Poowong added seven goals four to their side of the scoreboard. Lang Lang could only manage an additional one major and two behinds in response.

With a margin of 44 points at the main break, Lang Lang had some serious catching up to do if they hoped to make it across the line in front. Unfortunately for them Poowong had other ideas and booted another three goals six.

By the time the final term came to a close the visitors had added another five goals to their tally, finishing with 9.11-65. However, it was Poowong’s day. They finished with 15.17107.

Best on for the Pies was Jai Newcome who had three goals to his name. Lachlan Green, Jaemeel Knecht, Michael Harris, Timmy Hancock and Mitch Van’thoff we’re also influential. Jack Hazendonk matched Jai Newcome’s three-goal tally. Chris Doria, Trevor Hooker and James Doria kicked two majors each. Joseph Bisognin, Hayden Wallis and Tommy Wyatt each booted one.

For Lang Lang it was Ben Barwick who walked away as the best player on the day. His efforts were backed up by Sam Kendell, Will McGindle, Troy McPherson and Aaron Rose. Aaron Rose, Sam Kendell and Josh Brown led the goal kicking with two majors each while Travis Kitchin, Lachlan Barwick and Dwayne Harvey kicked one each.

Poowong’s win means they retain their thirdplace spot on the ladder. This is Lang Lang’s sixth straight loss of the season — they have not won a game all year — and so they stay at number 10, the bottom of the ladder.

They will have a chance to rectify that problem on Saturday when they play eighth-placed Yarragon at Yarragon. Poowong travel to play Nyora, who are coming off a tough loss to Catani.

The Lyrebirds stay on top on the under 16s competition ladder after the weekend.

They remain undefeated this season. Their victory over second-paced side Ellinbank meant stopped the Eagles snatching the top spot. It was the first loss of the year for Ellinbank.

Neerim Neerim South and Longwarry swap places after Longwarry's win over Yarragon. Neerim had been in third place but they had no opportunity to retain that position because they had the bye.

They will have a tough challenge if they want it back however -- the Cats play top side Buln Buln on Saturday.

Poowong's win over Lang Lang at home keeps them in fifth. Lang Lang stay at sixth after a loss from Yarragon who sit at seven.
