Drouin netballers showed improvement across the board, with C grade scoring an impressive win over Morwell on Saturday. A grade: Drouin 50 lost to Morwell 66. The Hawks had a great start and the scores were even at the end of the first quarter – showing that this relatively young (and older) team can hold its own against very good sides and will have a lot to prove in the second half of the season.

In goals, Kylie Proctor and Stacie Gardiner worked hard to score off every centre and make the most of each opportunity.

Deb Thomas showed her commitment and drive going for many contested balls, but also setting up many plays up and down the court.

As the score difference pushed out, the girls didn’t drop their heads and instead lifted to try and narrow it back down all through the last quarter. Award: Kylie Proctor. B grade: Drouin 38 lost to Morwell 40. This was one of the best games the Hawks have played all season.

It was a full team effort where everyone played their role with energy and intent.

A slow start is what eventually cost the Hawks the win, but a massive third quarter effort saw the margin reduced to one and a tightly fought last quarter going the way of the Tigers.

The Hawks’ whole defensive unit were outstanding all game.

Awards: Ali Newcombe. C grade: Drouin 37 defeated Morwell 28. It was a different team from last week to this that saw the Hawks take a convincing win, with the whole team being a part of it.

The girls came out hard, especially with defensive drives down the court, allowing the attackers to work the ball onto the ring – putting into practice both things the team had worked on.

Courtney Miller was awesome in goal shooter, mixing up her moves and rotations with Emily Bethune – and both girls shot well.

In defence, no matter the combination the girls worked hard to apply pressure on the Morwell attackers and stopping the ball before it even got into the ring.

Sarah Sharpe played a tight game in goal keeper all game; not allowing her player to score any easy goals.

Awards: Courtney Miller, Sarah Sharpe and Emily Bethune. Under 17s: Drouin 20 lost to Morwell 39. It was a good game by the Hawks, which showed the depth of the team and the girls who took the court.

At each end, the pressure applied was consistent. The attackers both kept possession and then, if it got turned over, worked hard to get it back. In the defence end, each player worked hard one-on-one to create turnovers and keep up the pressure.

In the midcourt, Holly Cheyne came on McArthur and Macy and played a useful wing defence role to keep this pressure going; along with Harriet Louden who moved the ball around the court beautifully all game. Awards: Holly Cheyne and Harriet Louden. Under 15s: Drouin 3 lost to Morwell 54. It was another improved four quarter performance from the Hawks, outlining how much these girls have learnt and improved thus far into the season against quality opposition.

The hard work is paying off and it is noticeable by all watching.

Defensively, Sharni Boote played wonderfully; shutting down her wing attack and applying awesome defensive pressure which allowed Allanah Jagoe to read the ball beautifully, taking several intercepts for the day.

Holly Cheyne got her hand to - and ran after - every loose ball, playing extremely well in the middle.

Awards: Sharni Boote, Allanah Jagoe and Holly Cheyne. Under 13s: Drouin 13 lost to Morwell 21. Another good game by the Hawks with some good patches of play throughout the game.

Throughout the game the girls tried lots of new combinations and positions and they adapted well. It was great to see them really trying to put into play the things worked on at training.

Hopefully next time the Hawks will be able to snatch a win.

Award: Kaden Gregg.
