Skills show out in the rain

Wet and slippery conditions at some of the grounds round six of the Warragul and District Junior Football League’s made for some tough matches.

But clubs are continuing show how they are developing and improving each week. LONGWARRY v. GARFIELD. Under 10 Beautiful morning for football for this game and, without wind, was even contest.

Both teams fought hard for the ball, the Crows scoring two goals in the first half.

To Garfield’s credit it never gave up the chase and pushed Longwarry to the end.

Longwarry held on for its first win of the season.

Garfield’s Anthony Freriks and Joshua Hull played their 50th games. Under 12 The rain held off for most of the game.

Longwarry asserted its dominance early with some great goals and numerous entries into the goal square.

Garfield fought back with some improved defensive play although this did not correspond to any score until late in the third term.

Longwarry showed why they are on top of the table in running out convincing winners. Under 14 Garfield jumped Longwarry in the 1st quarter with two goals to nil.

Longwarry tried hard with good tackles in the back line and had a lot of play in the second half but could not convert in reasonably good conditions.

Well fought out by both sides with Garfield getting the points. DROUIN MAROON v. BULN BULN. Under 10 In great conditions for the match between Drouin Maroon and Buln Buln the teams showed great ability and fought hard for the ball.

Buln kicked away although Drouin Maroon pushed hard in the final quarter it was a win for Buln. Under 12 The rain had stopped and Buln Buln started with the first centre break and looked dangerous early but Drouin Maroon continued to attack the ball and move the ball forward.

Buln Buln displayed some neat passing and marking but Drouin Maroon proved too strong in the end running out winners. Under 14 Buln Buln played Drouin Maroon at home with good ground conditions making for a great game of football.

Buln Buln came out strongly and challenged Drouin early kicking away in the first half.

Drouin returned in the second half but Buln Buln dug deep and got the win.

Drouin Maroon’s Will Bethune and Campbell Gibbons played their 100th games. NEERIM YARRAGON. Under 10 Wet and heavy conditions made for a hard fought battle between the Cats and Panthers.

Neerim dominated from the onset with long kicking and strong tackling.

Although Yarragon fought hard to resist the forward push Neerim came away with a strong win. Under 12 In damp conditions at Neerim South Yarragon got off to a slow start against a tall Neerim team.

Manning up well in the second half saw a tightly contested game with the ball well shared between both teams.

Yarragon fought on well all game and managed a good goal against a strong Neerim Districts.

Yarragon’s Lenny Frost played his 50th game Under 14 Muddy conditions made for a scrappy game at Neerim South.

It was a hard-fought contest from the first bounce.

Yarragon managed to get three goals on the board early but a determined Neerim side fought hard and got the score on the board to keep in touch. A late goal to Yarragon made a greater margin than the play indicated. ELLINBANK v. COLTS. Under 10 A cold drizzly winter day welcomed the team to Ellinbank.

Neverthele­ss it was a great contest between two skilled sides that were hard and committed to the contest. There were some great skills by hand and foot with some amazing marks considerin­g the slippery conditions. Ellinbank came out the winner. Under 12 Slippery conditions made for a game of some spectacula­r skids and a low scoring initially. DISTRICT v.

Ellinbank slowly built a convincing lead as the rain held off and although Colts used the ball well could not overcome the lead that Ellinbank had establishe­d.

Both teams played the game in fantastic spirit. Under 14 The rain held off for the game but the muddy conditions proved to be a slippery challenge at times.

The Colts and Ellinbank were very evenly matched all game with some hard tackles, great kicking and fantastic marks.

After a hard fought game Ellinbank proved too strong. HALLORA v. WARRANOR. Under 10 Despite Warranor proving to be a very strong team with brilliant ball skills Hallora applied great pressure the whole game.

It was an evenly matched contest with Warranor able to put the ball through the goals.

A great game to watch and both teams displayed great sportsmans­hip.

Hallora’s Tobias Mullen played his 50 games Under 12 No report was received of this match in which Caleb Pyart played his 50th game. Under 14 Hallora hosted Warranor with both teams playing great football.

Hallora was undermaned but its defence was brilliant against an attacking Warranor that eventually came out a clear winner. CALDERMEAD­E GOLD. Under 10 It was great morning for football and although the ground was a bit slippery and the rain held off.

Caldermead­e played the better to take out the win while Drouin held on until the end. Under 14 It was a competitiv­e start between two balanced teams in good conditions at Catani.

Both sides maintained good pressure with plenty of tackling.

Drouin capitalise­d in the 2nd half with its their run and carry. Caldermead­e fought well to the end but Drouin steadied and secured the victory. WARRAGUL BLUES BULLS. Under 10 Cold, wet conditions but all players attacked the football hard and fairly.

There were some great passages of play and some really good tackling by both teams. T

The Blues were able to find a bit more space at times to be able to kick two goals to the Bulls one1 to take the win. Under 12 On an overcast morning at Warragul with both teams putting in a great four quarter and hard-fought contest.

Only a few points separated the sides at the first break.

A quick goal from the Bulls saw them take an early lead.

Blues responded to apply a lot of mid and forward line pressure and were a little unlucky not to convert a needed goal.

After a quick goal to the Blues in the last quarter the Bulls took control with one more goal to seal the game and run out winners by 12 points. Under 14 The Blues hosted The Bulls at Marist College.

As the rain held off the Blues hit the scoreboard early and remained strong for all four quarters.

Work rates were up with hard contested football shown by both clubs.

A much better second half saw the Bulls match the Blues all around the ground playing hard and scoring in the second half but Blues remained composed and come away with a strong team orientated win.
