Another frustrating day for Gulls fans

-

It was another frustrating home ground performance by Warragul on Saturday.

Overall the Gulls were more than competitive for periods and the 71-point gap possibly not a true indication but it is the scoreboard that matters in the end. Moe kicked 21-14 to 10-9. The match was tight and entertaining for spectators in the first quarter and the early part of the second term.

The Gulls 1-5 trailed Moe 2-1 narrowly at quarter time.

They also showed a bit in the second quarter adding four goals.

But concentration lapses and a drop off in intensity that has been an issue for Warragul in many games reared their heads again.

The Lions rammed through eight goals for the term themselves to break away by 28 points, 10-4 to 5-6, at half time.

Moe also took the points in the third quarter – four goals to three – after the Gulls had pegged back the margin a little early in the term before the Lions ran over the top at the end with another seven goals in the final quarter.

Warragul’s cause wasn’t helped in the last term with Mitch Nobelius, its best player on the day, off with a rib injury cutting its available interchange players to two.

At best Nobelius will be on the doubtful list for next week.

Defenders Jake Hughes and Matt Rennie stood up well for much of the game but simply couldn’t hold back the tide when the flood gates opened.

Luke Tynan, in his fourth successive game for Warragul, but a week to week proposition depending on the needs of VFL team Casey Demons, was again among the side’s best.

Junior Mason McGarrity, available from Gippsland Power on Saturday, joined coach Ben Hughes as the Gulls’ main scorers with three goals each.

McGarrity showed his skills as a clever small forward and another of the side’s less experienced Will Cole kicked two from roving balls spilled from marking contests.

Sam Russell and Tom Kelly chipped in with the other goals. Moe had much more firepower. Dylan Farrell kicked five goals and Ash Dugan and the versatile Tom Long three each among a spread of 11 players to hit the scoreboard.

They more than compensated absence of Darnell Grech.

However, the main agenda setter for the Lions was former AFL player Bernie Vince who dominated the game from around the centre of the ground.

Warragul will be home again next week hosting Wonthaggi whose three wins this season have all been on its home ground.

If the Gulls can rediscover their A-game, or close to it, they will be well in with a chance of posting win number three. for the
