Warragul Probus Club
The May Meeting was held on Thursday, May 23 and the president inducted another new member into our Club and presented an O.B.E (over eighty) to one of our long serving members.
The guest speaker for May was local man Kevin Richardson.
Kevin spoke of his early childhood surviving around Collingwood and Fitzroy during the Depression years in very dire circumstances.
It was quite a harrowing tale but Kevin’s interpretation was inspirational to listen to.
At the age of eight years old he was taken into care, and even though this was difficult at first, he eventually was able to learn a great deal about life, especially when he had the help of a new director at the home that changed so much for him.
When Kevin left he was an apprenticed motor mechanic. He loved sport – and was very good at it — especially football. Football opened many doors for him and was behind his move to the Gippsland area to live and work.
He was an avid reader of anything and everything that was around him and because of this, his command of the English language was above average.
He was eventually able to became a journalist. In later life he became the editor of “The Gazette”.
Everyone that was listening to his story was enthralled and the message he was trying to get across was “if you can help and mentor a young person, who knows where that can lead and how it can influence future generations.”
