Big margins in reserves games

- By Will Watson Ellinbank remain undefeated in the EDFL reserves competitio­n and sit two wins in front of closest competitor Longwarry.

Lang Lang jump up to third place after their win over Catani on the weekend while Poowong replace them in fourth. The bottom six saw no movement after heavy losses for Neerim Neerim South, Yarragon, Catani, Nyora and Nilma Darnum.

Round 12 saw more of the astonishin­g margins spectators have become accustomed to in the reserves competitio­n this year.

Ellinbank’s obliterati­on of Yarragon foreshadow­ed a big win from their seniors later in the day.

The Eagles destroyed the Panthers by 164 points at Yarragon 1.0-6 to 27.8-170. That single major for the Panthers came in the final term.

Tom Robertson was best on ground for the Eagles. Nicholas Harper, Tony Wright, Steven Ballingall, Jayson Barwick and Michael Robertson were also influentia­l.

D. Mills was Yarragon’s best man. He was backed up by the efforts of Brydon Price, Brock Neve, Ben Damschke, Chris Wallace and Ben Fleming.

The Panthers’ solitary goal came from the boot of Matt Wood. The Eagles play Poowong on Saturday while the Panthers will take on Buln Buln.

Buln Buln notched up a huge win over Nilma Darnum at home. The Bombers went down by 132 points at Buln Buln. 21.15-141 to 1.3-9 was the final tally for both sides.

Nilma Darnum score a single behind in the second term but remained scoreless until the final quarter when a kick from Jack Jarred found the target between the posts. Jake Baker, Matthew Pearson, Reece Campbell, Brad Trotman, Kyan Willis and Joshua Bloink also made important contributi­ons.

Luke Galley was best on for Nilma Darnum. L. Galley, J. Price, B. Mooney, J. Dessent, J. HanssenDe Kort and J. Sugars also received honourable mentions. The Bombers play Nyora in their round 13 game. The Lyrebirds take on Yarragon.

The other big margin game was Lang Lang’s victory over Catani. The Tigers won by 90 points. Catani kicked one goal one in the first term, added to that by kicking another goal in the second and yet another major in the third before adding three majors in the final term.

Lang Lang were consistent throughout and finished the day on 19.13-127. The Blues ended the day 6.1-37.

Corey Boulton was best on ground for the Tigers. He was backed up by the efforts of Aidan Brown, Cory Dowson, Matthew Duggan and Daniel O'Sughrul.

Longwarry won their game against Poowong by 25 points at home. It was the closest result of the round.

Both sides kicked single majors in the first, although Longwarry squandered several other opportunit­ies, with seven behinds to their name in the first term.

The sides drew level at the main break, both on 21 points but Longwarry grabbed the wheel in the third and took control of the match from that point on. The match ended 9.12-66 to 6.5-41. Longwarry face Lang Lang on Saturday while Poowong take on Ellinbank.

Neerim Neerim South prevailed over Nyora on Saturday, winning by 38 points at home. The Cats tally was more than double that of the Saints by the end of the first term. The Cats stayed well front for the rest of the match, adding another major in the second, two in the third and another two before the final whistle blew.

The Saints kicked one goal one in the second and another two in the third. They were kept scoreless for the entirety of the final quarter. Neerim Neerim South play Catani this weekend. Nyora are scheduled to take on Nilma Darnum.
