Hawks respond in physical game

Drouin netballers bounced back with a 14-goal win over Sale in A grade on Saturday. A grade: Drouin 60 defeated Sale 46. It was a physical game in the midcourt from with start.

In centre, Alana Rippon was under the pump physically and did well to stay strong all day.

The Hawks played well as a team, with some great transition­s by the attackers into defence to create pressure for Kym Diston to mop up and get turnovers.

All the defenders did well to turn the ball over at crucial times when the Hawks made mistakes in attack.

Great goaling accuracy by Kylie Proctor kept the Hawks’ scoreline moving.

It was an all-round team effort and a good response by everyone individual­ly to play better after a disappoint­ing performanc­e at Bairnsdale. Awards: Kym Diston and Kylie Proctor. B grade: Drouin 38 lost to Sale 55. Sale was too strong for Drouin on Saturday. The Hawks didn’t start well, and that’s what eventually cost them.

Apart from the slow start, it was a highqualit­y contest. The Hawks were able to adjust to Sale’s fast pasted game.

Drouin was able to slow up the ball down court and, in attack, played a lot smarter and worked the ball through high pressure defence to score.

There are some very winnable games in the coming weeks for the Hawks who are keen to finish the season strong and cause a few upsets. Award: Abbey Tyrrell. C grade: Drouin 35 lost to Sale 37. It was another close game for Drouin. It was the third week in a row that the game was decided by three goals or less.

Drouin came out firing from the start against a very strong Sale team, applying pressure all the way down the court.

Rachel Pullen was athletic and burned her player in goal attack, setting up some great moves in the goal ring.

Moving through the midcourt, Kate Butler was a commanding force. Her presence settling the team and her timing on the ring was also excellent.

In defence, Georgia Henderson had a run in goal defence, covering her player and working hard one-on-one.

Unfortunat­ely, Sale just got on top and Drouin couldn’t score in the final few moments – but it was a great, tight game throughout.

Awards: Rachel Pullen, Kate Butler and Georgia Henderson. Under 17s: Drouin 32 lost to Sale 36. The Hawks played an amazing team game featuring a lot of intensity from start to finish.

The defensive pressure was outstandin­g all the way down the court.

Macy Newcombe, Kiarna Craig, Bailey Flemming and Harriet Louden all drove the ball down the court well. This allowed the attackers to work the ball around to score.

It was a great team effort, going down narrowly to a top side. Award: whole team. Under 15s: Drouin 6 lost to Sale 72. A very strong game by Drouin on the weekend.

Defensivel­y, Milli Tompkins played a competitiv­e and contesting game, pulling in every rebound and getting many turnovers.

There were several awesome plays in attack; patience and persistenc­e was pivotal, involving all players.

Holly Cheyne’s drive into the ring and on the centre passes made it impossible for Sale’s defenders to keep up with her, creating several shots at goal.

Overall it was a tough game, but the much-improved Drouin showed its hard work is paying off. Awards: Holly Cheyne and Milli Tompkins. Under 13s: Drouin 9 defeated Sale 58. A good game by Drouin against one of the top sides in the competitio­n.

There were some fantastic passages of play shown throughout the game, showcasing they do have the knowledge and skills to play some strong, competitiv­e netball.

Drouin improved its scoreline from last meeting with Sale by more than 20 goals. This is a testament to how much these kids are improving and how hard they’re working.
