Concert celebrates the music of Pink Floyd

-

A homage concert to Pink Floyd will make its Victorian debut at the West Gippsland Arts Centre on Saturday, August 24 at 8pm.

The concert, titled “The Great Gig in the Sky”, has been an annual staple in Sydney venues since 2003. With a reputation for breathtaking moments and stunning interpretations, it simply sells out.

In Warragul, the concert will feature numerous gems from “The Wall”, “Wish You Were Here” and “Dark Side of the Moon” showcased by some exceptional guest vocalists. They include Mick Pealing (“Stars”/“Spaniards”), Hugh Wilson (“Lenny Kravitz Band”/“Vertigo”), Nikki Nicholls (“John Farnham Band”), Michael Stangel (“The Voice”) and introduce Nicky Kurta.

Inimitable creative director Joseph Calderazzo (“Jenny Morris Band”) will coordinate a superb all-star band including Dave Leslie (“Baby Animals”), Ian Tilley (“Boom Crash Opera”), Davey Porter (“Jon Stevens Band”), Joel Sena and Nik Pringadi (“Rock of Ages”).

Vocalist Mick Pealing will join “The Great Gig in the Sky” for the first time as part of the Warragul and Melbourne shows.

Mick said the vocalists taking on Pink Floyd are a real mix of Sydney and Melbourne artists who come with plenty of credentials and talent.

He is a big fan of albums “Dark Side of the Moon” and “Wish You Were Here” and admits to knowing them like “the back of my hand”.

Mick will perform four songs from “Dark Side of the Moon” in the concert.

“Given a selection, naturally I went for the songs I’m more familiar with,” he said. “It’s been a real pleasure getting to know the songs intimately and wrapping my tonsils around them.”

Amazingly, Mick’s music career was kick started after reluctantly getting up on stage at a local concert.

Aged 17 or 18 years-old at the time, Mick came from a musical family, was exposed to many different styles and admits “music was actually something that was on my mind all the time”.

He gained success with Adelaide band “Stars” in the 1970s. They reformed and released a new album early last year.

“It’s been a joyful experience, reliving those songs and writing new ones,” he said.

Tickets for “The Great Gig in the Sky” are $65 for general, $60 for concession and $55 for members, youth under 18 and groups.
