Special service awards to local scout leaders

-

A number of scouting volunteers across the Mt Baw Baw District were recognised as being amongst Australia’s top scout leaders last week.

August 1 was World Scout Day when scouts across the world celebrated the 112th anniversary of the first scout camp at Brownsea Island.

A number of locals were recognised in the annual adult recognition awards:

A Silver Koala award for 14 to 16 years distinguished service was presented to Carol Kemp (district leader adult training support - Mt Baw Baw District).

Silver Wattle awards were presented for 10 to 12 years outstanding service to: Ricky Bradley (district commissioner - Mt Baw Baw District); Julie Kohn (Venturer leader - Warragul Scout Group); Rodney Watson (Group Leader - 1st Drouin Scout Group).

Special Service Awards were presented to volunteers who have made noteworthy contributions in their role, usually for more than three years, including: Jason Bailey, (Cub Scout Leader - Warragul Scout Group); Joy Flack (assistant Scout Leader - 1st Trafalgar Scout Group); Pamela Greenwood (group leader - 1st Newborough Scout Group) and, Brett Hicks (Joey Scout Leader - 1st Trafalgar Scout Group).

Chief Commissioner of Scouts Victoria Brendan Watson said the awards were richly deserved.

“In Victoria, adults in Scouting give 1.7 million hours each year to helping young Victorians to grow up to achieve their best,” he said.

“For most, their contribution is supporting weekly meetings at the local Scout hall, and occasional weekends away - camping, hiking, or learning new skills such as canoeing and rock climbing.

“At the same time, they are developing Victoria’s future leaders.

“In Scouting every young person gets multiple opportunities at leadership, in comparison with activities like school or sport where fewer get this experience,” Mr Watson said.
