Eagles hold top spot after crushing win

-

Ellinbank steamrolled Nyora on Saturday, winning the match-up 12.14.86 to 5.1-31 at Ellinbank.

The Eagles came out of the blocks firing, kicking four goals five to lead the scoring at the end of the first quarter by 23 points. The Saints had kicked one solitary goal.

The Eagles almost doubled their first quarter performance in the second term, kicking three goals four behinds to bring their tally at halftime to 7.9-51.

The Saints struggled to find the scoreboard. They had just two majors to their name at the main break.

The third quarter saw the Eagles waver somewhat, only managing one more major and another behind.

Nyora in fact outscored them in the third term, bringing their 12 points to 19 points just before the final term. But the Eagles regained their confidence and got back on the horse in the final quarter.

Their forward found the main target four times and also added four behinds. The Saints did their best to avoid a greater loss, kicking another two majors to bring their final tally to 5.1-31.

But the Eagles claimed the day with 12.14-86.

Best on ground for the victors was Hayden Stagg. Francis D’Agostino, Mitchell Cowan, Joshua Peterson, Steven Ballingall and Michael Urie also made important contributions.

Nyora’s best man on the day was Lachlan Fievez. He was backed up by the efforts of Mitchell Stansborough, Samuel Burns, Adam Tagliaferro, Benjamin Miller and Ryan Spooner.

Nyora drop two places on the ladder after the weekend’s result, going from fourth to sixth. The Eagles remain on top of the ladder, a position they have enjoyed for a number of weeks now.

Ellinbank will play Longwarry at Longwarry on Saturday while the Saints will travel to take on Poowong.
