Big margins dominate on reserves’ scoreboard­s

- By Will Watson Another round of the EDFL reserves competitio­n and another round of big margins across the grade.

Catani went down to Buln Buln by 21 points at home on Saturday; 5.4-34 to 8.7-55 was the final score.

The Lyrebirds raced in front in the first term, kicking three clean goals. The Blues were on one goal one by that stage.

But Catani came within a goal by the end of the first half after kicking another two majors, however that was the closest the Blues would come to the lead all day.

The Lyrebirds charged ahead in the third, booting three goals five. The Blues were kept scoreless in that quarter and the margin blew out to 27 points.

Buln Buln maintained control in the third and ended the day 21 points up.

Jarrod Castle was the Lyrebirds’ best man on the day. He was backed up by the efforts of Brent Waddell, Simon Dawson, Ricky McKerrow, Isaac Lalor and Andrew Welfare.

For the Blues it was Dylan Williams who was best on ground. Wade Haysom, Brayden Kennedy, Blake Matthews, John Traynor and Dylan Gregson also made important contributi­ons.

Ellinbank completely and utterly destroyed Nyora when they met at Ellinbank on Saturday.

The Saints went down by an enormous 103 points – 17.11-113 to 1.4-10.

The stage was set early for obliterati­on early in the game, with the Eagles walking all over the Saints in the first term to notch up an unanswered 40 points.

It continued in the second term, with Ellinbank adding another six goals to their tally to bring their scoreline to 12.6-78 at halftime.

Nyora were on just one behind and remained with just one behind until the fourth quarter, when Dylan Harkin managed to slot his sides’ only major score. The Eagles finished the day on 17.11-113.

The Saints kicked another three behinds in the fourth and ended the match with 1.410.

Best on ground for the Eagles was Jayson Barwick. Michael Pandolfo, Andrew Quirk, Jacob Walker, Bradley Berry and Tony Wright also received honourable mentions.

Lang Lang suffered a tough loss against Poowong at home on Saturday.

The Tigers went down to the Magpies by 43 points – 2.4-16 to 8.11-59. Lang Lang struggled to find confidence in the first term and the Magpies almost doubled their score by the end of the quarter.

The second term was worse for the Tigers and Poowong entered the main break up by 22 points. The Tigers failed to find the main target between the posts for the rest of the match.

The Pies meanwhile added three goals to their tally in the third term and four behinds in the final term. The day ended with a 43point Magpie victory – 8.11-59 to 2.4-16.

Hayden Wallis was best on ground for Poowong with Reece Attenborou­gh, Ben White, Kyle Aitken, Jake Cooper and Darcy Burgess also making important contributi­ons.

Cory Dowson led the bests for Lang Lang. Eden Shepherd, Cailem Jenkins, Brad Michie and Shaun McLean also were influentia­l.

The greatest winning margin this week came in Longwarry’s easy victory over Yarragon at 157 to one. Six goals six came in the first term for the Crows and the Panthers failed to find the scoreboard.

Longwarry closed in on the 100-point mark at the main break, their opponents again remaining scoreless.

It was not until the third term did the Panthers finally put a number on the scoreboard, coming in the form of a behind.

But Longwarry were a long way in front, hitting the 20-goal mark just before the final term.

The Pantherd did not score again in the final term. Longwarry finished the day on 157 points – 156 more than their visitors.

Casey Wells was best on ground for the Crows. He was backed up by the efforts of Andrew Knight, Braydon Monroe, Shaun Eckhardt, Jack Muirhead and Brody Hamilton.

Neerim Neerim South comfortabl­y accounted for Nilma Darnum, winning against the Bombers 13.12-90 to 3.3-21.

The Bombers kicked two majors in the first but the Cats had doubled that by the end of the quarter.

Another major was added to the Bombers’ tally before the main break and Neerim Neerim South kicked two goals to put their scoreline at 6.5-41 at halftime.

Nilma Darnum’s accuracy suffered in the second half. The Bombers kicked two behind in the third and another behind in the final term, but no major scores.

The Cats added three goals to their tally in the third term and another four goals in the final term.

Neerim Neerim South finished the day 13.12-90 to 3.3-21. Justin Lockett was best on ground for the victors. Daniel Fusinato, Adam White, Sean Ladds, Tim Fraser and Gabe Marsden also made important contributi­ons.

For the Bombers it was Andrew Campbell who walked away as his side’s best man on the day. Luke Galley, David Wade, Thomas Trimble, Liam Van Eyk and Robert Campbell were also influentia­l.
