“Meet the Bees” / Beekeeping for Beginners

-

South Gippsland Beekeepers are running a Field Day to provide new or aspiring beekeepers with a chance to learn about beekeeping and get hands-on experience with bees. Bronwyn Barton, President of the South Gippsland Beekeepers Club said, “Beekeeping has experienced a surge of interest in recent years, with hobbyist beekeepers now outnumbering commercial operators. More than ever people are aware of the importance of bees to our environment, and want to help bees to remain part of the landscape.”

“We held our last field day in 2016, when over 200 people attended from all over South Gippsland. Many went on to become beekeepers and joined our club. Now it’s time to once again let potential beekeepers experience the fascinating world of bees.” she continued.

The emphasis with a Field Day is to provide participants with live demonstrations and hands-on experience with bees. Sessions will be conducted in small groups so that participants can interact with experienced beekeepers and have their questions answered. Most sessions are under cover.

Note: To participate in open-hive demonstrations a minimum of a face veil is required, and full bee suits are recommended.

The event will be held at the Mirboo North Recreation Reserve, from 10am to 3pm on Sunday 10th November. The entry fee is $10 per adult, and is free for school age children. No dogs allowed on-site.
