Warragul Philatelic Society members (pictured) discussed the Geelong and Ballarat Stamp Fairs at the October meeting.

Ringwood books will no longer be received. Guest speaker Peter spoke about A World at War, 1914-1919, with stamps from Australia, Britain, New Zealand, Canada and France, through slides. He showed a series of recruitment posters, and stamps of the various Australian campaigns.

New Zealand was one of the first countries to use plastic surgery to help rehabilitate their wounded, and the first to hold a dawn service (in case of a sneak attack)

In Britain censored mail was sorted in a building covering over five acres. Canada and France issued only one stamp each, and only a few after the armistice, and after the explosion of the Halifax, the biggest explosion of the war.

The competition results were Felix, first with his display titled “To the Moon, to Mars, To boldly go where no man has gone before, to infinity and beyond.” Jeanette was second with “Spaceships. Next competition is Dinosaurs.

Over October 12 and 13 members travelled by bus to Geelong and Ballarat stamp fairs, staying overnight in Ballarat.

Both fairs were well attended, and with a good balance of stamps, coins and ephemera on display by dealers, there was something for everyone.

Members enjoyed the displays and the chance to find a hidden gem. Members thanked Felix for his organisation, and Doug for driving the bus. Plans are already underway for another trip in the future.

The next meeting is November 8 at Warragul North Primary School, circuit books 7pm, meeting 7.30pm, For more details contact Stan 0428254568, or Jeanette 0409793081.

Warragul Tarago Probus Club members continue to enjoy meetings which are informative and full of fellowship.

Dee explained about the different kinds of animal assisted therapy including intervention, activities to provide a unique range of canine human support services. The dog visitor on the day was Oscar, a woolly coated wire haired German Pointer - a very shaggy gentle dog, who was happy to wander up the aisles and stop for a pat on his way.

In October members were fortunate to have former police chief Kel Glare as guest speaker.

Kel provided a refreshing insight in to his family of origin and his career as a policeman and a lawyer.

He shared his views on the court system, proactive policing versus reactive policing and the influence of politics on the policing system.

Many members were delighted to buy a copy of his book “The Angry Ant”

Some members are very active and were able to report on what they had been up to.

Recently a member and her family participated in the Great Ocean Road Run.

Three members went to Adelaide to participate in the Table Tennis Masters Competition and came back with an impressive assortment of medals from the over 80s competition.

The bus trip to the Dandenong Ranges and Cloudehill Gardens was a great success.

Members enjoyed the stop at the Sassafras Village Green for morning tea.
