Local pairs dominate over 60s

-

Local pairings dominated at the over 60s women’s pairs event at Traralgon on Friday.

In the quarter finals, the Drouin pair of Mary Firth and Denise Hamilton had a solid win over the Warragul pair of Kerrie Currie and Pat Hammond 18/9. Hamilton ignored the discomfort of playing in a moonboot with her injured ankle to record some good bowls.

The other Drouin pair of Jan Aubrey and Maureen Leighton were too good for the Traralgon RSL pair of Shirley McKenzie and Margaret Gibbins 23/8.

The Garfield pair of Alexis Taylor and Susan

Stansfield were unsure of how they would perform against last year’s winners Luci Dalli and Kaye Garry from Traralgon. After 10 of the 15 ends, there was an upset on the cards as the Garfield pair got away to an early lead. Dalli and Garry had a couple of big ends to go away to a 21/13 win but had to fight hard for the victory.

In the remaining quarter-final, the Neerim District duo of Karren Sheers and Pat FraserAurisch went away to a 12/0 lead over the Warragul pair of Gabrielle Draisma and Shirley Melsen. Draisma and Melsen fought back but Sheers and Fraser-Aurisch won narrowly 18/15.

The all-Drouin semi-final saw Jan Aubrey and Maureen Leighton win 16/14.

Neerim District’s Sheers and FraserAurisch were too good for the reigning champions Dalli and Garry in the other semi-final, winning 18/5.

The final will be held at Traralgon under the roof on Friday, November 8 at 9.30am.

The winners will go on to play the winners from South Gippsland in the Strzelecki Region playoffs in February for the right to play in State Champions Week in Bendigo in April.
