Drop off e waste

-

Baw Baw Shire is hosting an e waste free drop off day in Warragul on November 23 between 9am and 2pm.

The drop off site is Solo Resource Recovery Depot 10A Endeavour St Warragul.

The Victorian Government’s e-waste to landfill ban now applies across Victoria.

The e-waste (or electronic waste) to landfill ban came into effect in July. Any e-waste can no longer be placed in kerbside bins.

E-waste is any item with a plug, battery or power cord that is no longer working or wanted. It covers a whole range of items from phones and refrigerators to fluorescent light tubes.

According to Sustainability Victoria, e-waste is growing three times faster than the rate of standard municipal waste. It contains many potentially hazardous and valuable materials, which do not belong in landfill and can be reused.

Staff will be on hand to direct residents and approve items. Batteries will also be accepted including lead acid (car, truck, boat, caravan or similar).

This offer is available to all residents, booking is not required. Simply present your ID as proof of residency (such as driver’s licence or rates notice).

However, items such as bulky white goods such as refrigerators, clothes dryers, stoves, washing machines and ovens will not be accepted.

These will be redirected to the metal’s bins at the Lardner Transfer Station.

Other items that won’t be accepted include anything that cannot be lifted by a single person, any hazardous item such as broken glass and any general rubbish or illegal dumped items.

A variety of alternative free and local e-waste disposal options are also available.

E-waste can be dropped off free of charge at council operated tips in Lardner, Trafalgar, Neerim South and Erica during normal open hours.

The council customer service centres in Drouin and Warragul can accept smaller items such as mobile phones, printer cartridges and small electronic accessories.

Mayor Mikaela Power said the free drop off was the perfect way to dispose of any old and unwanted electronics.

“By keeping e-waste out of landfill, we’ll better protect our environment and recover more precious resources like copper, silver and gold that can be recycled and reused.”

“If you can’t make it to Warragul on the day, you can still dispose of e-waste for free at all Council operated transfer stations at Lardner, Trafalgar, Neerim South and Erica, or our customer service centres in Drouin and Warragul for smaller items,” she said.
