Howie Bros entertain

-

Former Warragul lads “The Howie Bros” will return to Drouin after a two-year break on Thursday, November 21 at 2pm.

Performing alongside Australian yodelling great Wayne Horsburgh, “The Howie Bros” will present an “Afternoon Melodies” show at Drouin Anglican Church Hall.

Expect some wonderful entertainment with lots of “singalongs”, laughs, well-known songs and different instruments.

“The Howie Bros” are currently celebrating 40 years of recording. They won their first Golden Guitar as members of band “1901” at Tamworth in 1979 for their first album, “An Old Fashioned Country Way of Singing”.

Gippslanders might remember the identical twins Graeme and John Howie who attended Warragul North Primary School from about 1955 until the early 60s. Their parents had a dairy farm on Brandy Creek Road.

When they were seven, the pair started singing lessons with June Orchard at Albert Fox’s music studio in Warragul Arcade. She recognised their vocal harmony talent and suggested they also learn piano. They trained with Irene Howells in Bowen Street, Warragul.

As Graeme says, “She was a wonderful piano teacher, who had the right mix of discipline and inspiration.”

After studying music, they both worked as secondary teachers. John was Kylie Minogue’s music teacher at Camberwell High School.

“The Howie Bros” have always loved vocal harmony in their music and are the only Australians to have won the International Harmony Award in the USA.

They have also won three Golden Guitars in Tamworth.

They have recorded 40 albums and their latest release is “Dimboola”. It features “Green Rollin’ Hills” which particularly relates to Drouin and Warragul and “Chooks in Caravans” written after seeing chooks around Korumburra.

Wayne Horsburgh is Australia’s premier male yodeller. He has won eight “Mo” awards for club entertainment in Australia. He sings in the style of Frank Ifield, Slim Whitman and Marty Robbins.

Born and raised around Benalla, Wayne spent 25 years performing in USA with greats like Merle Haggard, George Jones and Vince Gill. He has just released a new album called “Reminiscing”.

The Drouin concert will run from 2pm to 3.30pm.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the door prior to the performance. Admission includes a cup of tea and biscuits at interval.
