Garfield win to retain second spot LADDERS

-

It was a mixed bag of something and nothing for Garfield’s pennant sides this week.

Garfield’s top side travelled all the way to Traralgon on Saturday as rain again came down over most of Gippsland.

Division two: Garfield versus Traralgon (3) washed out.

The first half of the game was good for Garfield, with three rinks up at the break. A win was on the horizon.

However, the rain then obscured the horizon and the game was cancelled. Garfield came home with nothing.

As no games were played in division two, the side was not disadvantaged, and retains second place on the ladder.

Division four: Garfield (2) 18/112 defeated Yarragon 2/81.

Garfield hosted Yarragon and, although the rain was on-and-off, the game was completed.

Fortunately, enough games were completed in division four for the round to count.

Garfield persevered through the light intermittent rain for a very good 112/81 overall win.

Barry Johnson’s rink, consisting of Barrie Smith, Garry Salomons and Ray Biffin, started slowly, being down by five shots before they scored. However, they came back well to be four shots up at the break.

Garfield maintained the pace when play resumed, winning 28/23.

The rink of Maureen Lamport, Damian Brick, Helene Newton and skip Bob Lamport, were in an up-and-down tussle all day, eventually winning by 21/16.

Don Knight’s rink of Wes Goodman, Brian Fox and Malcolm Newham bolted out of the gates to a nine-shot lead early. Yarragon pegged them back to be tied up at the break.

The same continued after the break, with Yarragon handing them a 24/30 loss.

Rod James’ rink of Frank Prins, Cliff Stephens and Graeme Burton were the standouts of the day, giving their opposition rink a whitewashing.

They dropped only one end before the break, before romping home 39/12.

The perseverance paid off with Garfield retaining its third spot on the ladder and catching up some points on the top two sides.

Tuesday

As Tuesday was Melbourne Cup day, no midweek pennant was played.

As a result, the ladder is unchanged with the Garfield side holding second.
