Rain impacts WGBD again

-

It was another miserable day on Saturday for West Gippsland Bowls Division players with only six games finished.

As persistent rain fell across the region, two games were completed under the roof at Traralgon, two under the roof at Morwell and two outside – one on the grass at Traralgon RSL and one on the synthetic at Garfield.

Many games started, only to be washed out after a few ends. At some clubs, it rained all afternoon.

In division one, Traralgon 19/105 defeated Newborough 1/76 at Traralgon and Longwarry 16/83 defeated Traralgon RSL 4/78 in the only two completed games.

Playing indoors in pleasant surroundings, all was set for a top game between the top two teams – Traralgon and Newborough.

Newborough started well and got away to a handy lead, however, Traralgon pegged them back and narrowly led at afternoon tea. Following the break, it was all systems go for Traralgon who built a big lead and went on to a convincing victory.

Overall, it was a strong effort by Traralgon who were able to gain momentum and string together multiple ends to put pressure on Newborough.

Traralgon RSL took on Longwarry outside on the grass in inclement conditions.

The match was close all day, with all rinks neck and neck throughout.

Traralgon RSL are in a rebuilding phase with several experienced players from last year missing. They continue to blood new players with pleasing results.

Longwarry’s win promotes them to third place on the ladder. This is an excellent result for the club who were promoted from division two last year and had to play the powerful Newborough and Traralgon teams in the first two matches of the season.

It was not an easy start; however, they are unbeaten following their losses to the two top teams.

There will be no WGBD pennant played next Saturday due to the Vic Open in Shepparton.
