Neerim left shaking heads after loss

Neerim District bowlers enjoyed a good day for pennant on Saturday.

Although it was at a bit windy, at least there was no rain.

Division two: Neerim

Newborough (2) 90/112.

In a display of never give up, Newborough came from 24 shots down at the break to run away with a 22-shot win to leave Neerim bowlers shaking their heads wondering what had happened.

Peter Throup (skip), Ray Watts, Rob Cook and Karren Sheers defeated J. Michaels’ team 31/27.

Neerim jumped out of the gates and by the eighth end had picked up four threes and a five to lead 19/3. Newborough picked up a four but Neerim continued its dominance to lead 27/7 at the break, having won 10 of the 13 ends.

What followed was a complete turnaround. Newborough dominated the second half, picking up several threes and a 5 while restrictin­g Neerim to ones. By the 22nd end, Newborough trailed by just one. However, Neerim managed to pick up singles on the last three ends to hang on by four shots.

Shane Hogan (skip), Peter Brooks, Greg Bond and John Rochford lost to G. Cocks’ team 21/35.

Newborough got off to a good start and led by six before Neerim closed the gap with a five on the fifth end. Newborough eased ahead only for Neerim to claw back and level the scores at 15-all on the 14th end.

Newborough again eased ahead, leading by eight, before finishing strongly, including a five on the 23rd end, to win by 14 shots.

Angus McGillivra­y (skip), Trevor Kuhnell, Ross Pollard and Chris Hogan defeated J. Goldie’s team 25/23.

The game started off evenly with teams trading ends. On the 10th end, Neerim got on a run to win five ends in a row and lead by 12 shots.

As with other rinks, Newborough came out after the break and went on a winning spree. They passed Neerim on the 23rd end and led by two on the 24th end. Neerim pick up a four on the last end to win by two shots.

Neil Adams (skip), Jim Fallon, Julie Adams and Colin McKay lost to N. Michael’s team 13/27.

The game started off evenly, scores 5/7 after seven ends. By the break, Neerim trailed by four but were still in the hunt. Again, it was Newborough to make the charge, picking up seven on the next three ends to lead by 11. Whatever Neerim tried, Newborough seemed to do a bit better as they stretched out the lead to 14 for a comfortabl­e win.

Division four: Neerim District (2) lost to Yarragon 77/98.

Neerim District played away against Yarragon in what was a close game. The difference at the break was only eight shots, but Yarragon kicked away in the second half to win.

Jim Schroeder (skip), Wes Ellis, Gerry Engelstad and Graeme Wingrove lost to S. Mazza’s team 19/26.

Neerim trailed early and was down 1/7 on the sixth end. A five on the 10th end had Neerim two shots up after a fight back. However, Yarragon then won the next four ends and led by 11 shots by the 20th end.

District lost to

Neerim won four of the last five ends but went down by seven shots.

Russell Meehan (skip), Thelma Schroeder, Neville Cousins and Bruce Mironow defeated J. Grigg’s team 28/24.

Scores were four-all after four ends before Neerim picked up a four. Yarragon responded with a four and scoring continued to be close, tied 15-all on the 15th end.

Neerim kicked away with several multiples, including a four, to lead by eight shots. Yarragon came back with a four, but Neerim recovered those to lead by eight again on the 23rd end. Yarragon picked up four on the last two ends but went down by four shots.

Mal Collins (skip), Gerald Winter, George Rymer and Sue Nelsun lost to R. Polmear’s team 16/25.

Scoring was tight as Neerim led 5/4 after seven ends. They picked up a five on the next end to have a six-shot lead. Yarragon responded, picking up seven over the next four ends, to hit the lead.

The two teams traded ends with Neerim trailing 13/14 on the 17th end. Yarragon started a run to the finish, picking up a number of multiples while Neerim could only manage singles. Yarragon won by nine shots.

Bill Cook (skip), Tony Thornton, Stephen Halligan and Des Pelly lost to H. Mitchell’s team 14/23.

Scoring was tight early, scores level on the seventh end. Yarragon picked up four over the next two ends, but Neerim closed the gap to two. Yarragon went on a winning streak and, while mainly picking up only ones and twos, stretched the lead out to 11 by the 23rd end. Neerim won the last two ends but could only reduce the margin to nine shots.

There was no midweek pennant due to the Victorian Open competitio­n.

Longwarry has climbed into second on the division one ladder following a narrow home victory over Trafalgar on Saturday.

Division one: Longwarry 18/101 defeated Trafalgar 2/97.
