Longwarry to play at night

The battle between second and third on the division one ladder went down to the wire, with just five shots separating Longwarry and Newborough.

Although dropping to third on the ladder, Longwarry has repeatedly demonstrat­ed it has what it takes to match it with the top division one sides.

It sets up a blockbuste­r clash against top placed Traralgon on Friday from 5.30pm. It is the first night pennant game and is expected to generate a good turnout of spectators under the roof at Traralgon.

Division one: Longwarry 4/85 Newborough 16/90.

Elio Meggetto, Judy Eastwell, Kenneth Towt and Barry White (skip) defeated Paul Sherman’s team 24/23.

This rink was a tight contest all day. With scores locked at 20-all on end 22, Longwarry picked up a matching winning four on the next end. Newborough won the last two ends, but Longwarry held on to win.

Brian Hennessy, Mark Serong, Hank Metselaar and Russell White (skip) lost to Nosha Michaels’ team 16/19.

In a tight, low-scoring game with several lead changes, Newborough finished off the game stronger. They won six of the last eight ends.

Glenn Pask, Grant Pask, Jason Lieshout and lost to

Slim Eastwell (skip) lost to Alan Grubb’s team 20/28.

In another close game, Longwarry was within one shot by end 16. However, they lost 14 shots in the next six ends. The boys rallied to pick up six shots in the last three ends, but the damage had already been done.

Ken White, Simon Counsel, Ian Peterson and John McCarthy (skip) defeated Kevin Lovett’s team 25/20.

Longwarry went into the break one shot up in a close first half. Straight after, they picked up six shots in the first two ends to set up a great win.

Division six: Longwarry (2) 8/59 defeated Traralgon (6) 2/34.

Reg Dunn, Ron Sutton, Frank Hone and Vicki Hanks (skip) defeated N. Esler’s team 37/11.

In a tight game early, Traralgon had a twoshot lead after the seventh end. That was all the joy they had as Longwarry won 16 of the last 18 ends. The skip was a standout in the great win.

Sharon Twite, Lorna Sheedy, Brian Mason and Gerard “Hogg” Mitchell (skip) lost to J. Goodwin’s team 22/23.

Traralgon got the jump on Longwarry to lead by nine shots at end 16. Longwarry fought back strongly to tighten the scores.
