Longwarry play at night

Longwarry’s division one team travelled to Traralgon on Friday to play in the first ever WGBD Pennant night game.

Traralgon totally outplayed Longwarry on its home rink, winning three of the four rinks to win by 57 shots.

Division six cemented their top spot on the ladder with a close eight-shot win over Drouin in beautiful conditions on Saturday.

Division one: Longwarry 2/67

Traralgon 18/124.

Elio Meggetto, Judy Eastwell, Kenneth Towt and Barry White (skip) lost to Jim Scullin’s team 13/35.

Longwarry was competitiv­e early and only five shots down by end 10. Traralgon put a big gap in the margin over the next five ends to set up a 22-shot win.

Brian Hennessy, Mark Serong, Hank Metselaar and Russell White (skip) lost to Matt Ferrari’s team 16/33.

Longwarry was out bowled from the start, down 14 shots by end six. The boys put in some good bowls later in the game but were beaten by the better team on the night.

Glenn Pask, Grant Pask, Jason Lieshout, and Slim Eastwell (skip) defeated Ian Kirkup’s team 23/21.

Longwarry was slow to start and seven shots down by end 12, with only the skip keeping them in the game. They turned things around lost to and started to play as a team, picking up nine shots in four ends to take a two-shot lead.

The remainder of the team was tight with Longwarry holding on to win by two shots in a high standard game.

Ken White, Simon Counsel, Ian Peterson and John McCarthy (skip) lost to Wayne Lynch’s team 15/35.

Traralgon got out to a 10-shot lead early, but Longwarry fought back to be only two shots down by end 11. Traralgon won nine of the next 11 ends, picking up some big numbers. Longwarry won the last three ends but the damage had already been done.

Division six: Longwarry (2) 9/53 defeated Drouin (4) 1/45.

Reg Dunn, Lorna Sheedy, Ron Sutton and Frank Hone (skip) drew Lester Gouge’s team 27/27.

This rink was a ding-dong battle all day with scores level at the break. Fittingly, scores were also level at end of the day.

Sharon Twite, Brian Mason, Edward Bluck and Gerard “Hogg” Mitchell (skip) defeated Maureen McMillan’s team 26/18.

The Longwarry rink knew early on that they had a game on their hands and were three shots down going into the break. Just after play resumed, Longwarry had a purple patch picking up 13 shots in five, including a seven on end 21, to set up a stunning eight-shot victory.
