Neerim hold nerve to get second draw

Neerim District’s division two team played away against Traralgon for its second draw for the season.

In the last four encounters with Traralgon (3), Neerim have drawn, won by one. won by 50, and drawn again.

Division two: Neerim District drew Traralgon (3) 92/92.

Peter Throup (skip), Neil Adams, Robert Cook and Karren Sheers lost to G. Locke’s team 21/29.

Traralgon led 7/0 after three ends but Neerim got within one on the eighth end. Traralgon had a series of big ends to lead 20/7 on the 12th end. Neerim staged a comeback, winning six of the next seven ends to trail by just four shots. Traralgon kicked again to stretch the lead out to 11. Neerim won the last two ends.

Angus McGillivra­y (skip), Pat Fraser-Aurisch, Ross Pollard and Chris Hogan lost to R. Davey’s team 15/31.

The first six ends only produced singles in Traralgon’s favour. A two to Neerim on the seventh end had Neerim trailing 3/7. Traralgon won five ends in a row, including a four and a five, to see Neerim trail 3/19 on the 12th end. With Neerim trailing 6/29 on the 18th end, the pressure was on to cut the margin. They won six of the last seven ends and this comeback helped bring about the overall draw.

Ray Watts (skip), Jim Fallon, Julie Adams and Colin McKay defeated M. Cummings’ team 33/12.

Neerim had a great start and led 13/0 after four ends and 17/1 after seven ends. Neerim led by 20 shots on the 12th end when Traralgon found some form. The rest of the game was even.

Shane Hogan (skip), Peter Brooks, Trevor Kuhnell and Tony Thornton defeated T. James’ team 23/20.

Traralgon won four of the first five ends, but a seven to Neerim had the score 7/6 on the fifth end. Neerim had a four-shot lead after 11 ends, but Traralgon plugged away to level at 12-all on the 14th end. Scores were again level on the 19th end. Neerim soon had a four-shot break, only for Traralgon to level at 20-all on the penultimat­e end. With all other rinks finished and Traralgon leading by three across the board, Neerim held their nerve and picked up a three on the last end to win the rink and level the overall scores.

Division four: Neerim District (2) lost to Yallourn North 93/100.

Jim Schroeder (skip), Thelma Schroeder, Graeme Wingrove and John Rochford lost to R. Roberts’ team 12/28.

Neerim was competitiv­e early, level at five-all after five ends. Yallourn North had a winning streak of eight of the next nine ends. Trailing 6/18, Neerim picked up a three only to see Yallourn North win four twos in a row and take the lead to 17. Neerim pulled back one shot to end the day.

Mal Collins (skip), Gerald Winter, Tom Goodwin and George Rymer defeated S. Lovison’s team 39/13.

Neerim dominated this rink from the start, leading 13/0 after four ends. Yallourn North fought back, winning seven of the next 10 ends to trail by eight on the 14th end. Neerim dominated again, winning nine of the last 11 ends, including four threes and a four, to run out easy winners.

Stephen Halligan (skip), Maureen “Cookie”

Halligan, Des Pelly and Kay Cousins lost to G. Platchinda’s team 20/29.

Scoring was close early as Neerim trailed 4/7 on the ninth end. Neerim won the next four ends to lead 14/7. Yallourn North hit the front on the 18th end and continued to power home, having won six of the last nine ends.

Russell Meehan (skip), Greg Bond, Neville Cousins and Bruce Mironow lost to T. Phillips’ team 22/30.

Neerim got off to a shocker and trailed 1/15 after eight ends. Neerim found its groove and trailed by just five on the 16th end. Yallourn North got the lead out to 11 but Neerim reduced this to five on the 21st end. Neerim dropped a five but got a five on the penultimat­e end, but Yallourn North finished well.

Midweek

Division two: Neerim District defeated Yinnar 60/46.

Karren Sheers (skip), Maureen “Cookie” Halligan, Sue Nelsun and Stephen Halligan lost to Jenni Harris’ team 13/19.

Despite dropping a four on the third end, Neerim started well and led 12/6 by the 10th end. Then the wheels fell off. In a huge turn around, Neerim could only score on one of the final 11 ends. Yinnar picked up six shots in three ends to level the scores, before picking up a series of ones to run out winners.

Thelma Schroeder (skip), Marion Willis, Gerry Engelstad and Jim Schroeder defeated Pat Evenden’s team 25/14.

Neerim got two fours in the first six ends to lead 10/2. A three and a four on the 12th and 13th ends had the score at 20/6. The run home had Yinnar cut three from the margin.

Pat Fraser-Aurisch (skip), Kay Cousins, John Rochford and Russell Meehan defeated Jan Summerhaye­s’ team 22/13.

Neerim led 6/2 after six ends but Yinnar hit back and soon led by two shots. Neerim responded and took control of the game, picking up 16 shots to five over the final 11 ends.
