Disappoint­ment for Neerim

It wasn’t a good week for Neerim District with three losses recorded.

Division two: Neerim District lost to Warragul 84/102.

Peter Throup (skip), Robert Cook, Pat FraserAuri­sch and Karren Sheers lost to Andrew Glover’s team 21/26. Neerim won the first two ends, but Warragul won the next four to see Neerim trail 4/9 on the sixth end. A three on the eighth end made the lead seven shots. Neerim took the next three ends but Warragul had three consecutiv­e big ends to lead by 12 on the 14th. Neerim staged a comeback, winning eight of the last 11 ends but fell short.

Angus McGillivra­y (skip), Neil Adams, Gerry Engelstad and Chris Hogan lost to Clive Padgham’s team 16/26. A slow start cost Neerim as Warragul led by eight after eight ends. Three ends in a row to Neerim had them just four shots behind. Warragul kicked away with four winning ends and, while Neerim cut the lead with a four, it wasn’t enough.

Ray Watts (skip), Jim Fallon, Julie Adams and Colin McKay lost to Graeme Davis’ team 15/37. Neerim had a nightmare start, dropping a six on the first end. They won the next three ends to lead 7/6. From then on, Neerim struggled to score against excellent bowling. Neerim trailed by 11 shots at the break and things didn’t improve after. A four gave Neerim hope but Warragul came home strongly.

Shane Hogan (skip), Peter Brooks, Trevor Kuhnell and Tony Thornton defeated Bill Clapper’s team 32/13. Ones and twos were typical scores early and Neerim led 6/4 after seven ends. They won seven ends in a row to lead 15/4 on the 11th end. Neerim continued to dominate after the break. Warragul got a two on the 20th end but Neerim won the last five.

Division four: Neerim District (2) lost to Warragul (3) 67/115.

Jim Schroeder (skip), Ross Pollard, Graeme Wingrove and Marion Willis lost to Barry Downer’s team 19/27. Neerim won nine of the first 11 ends and led 13/5. Warragul strung together six winning ends, including a four and a five, to lead by seven shots. Scoring for the last eight ends was very even.

Mal Collins (skip), Gerald Winter, Tom Goodwin and George Rymer lost to Chris Wilkins’ team 18/28. Scores were level at four-all when Warragul won four ends in a row to lead by seven. Neerim took seven of the next eight ends to lead 16/15. Warragul won six of the last eight ends, with a four and a three.

Stephen Halligan (skip), Thelma Schroeder, Des Pelly and Maureen “Cookie” Halligan lost to Greg Mitchell’s team 5/43. A very disappoint­ing day for this Neerim rink. They managed to win only three ends with the opposition just too good.

Russell Meehan (skip), Greg Bond, Neville Cousins and John Rochford defeated David Gatewood’s team 25/17. Trailing by four shots, Neerim won four ends to lead 8/5. Scores were level at 10-all after 13 ends. Warragul eased ahead only for Neerim to pick up eight shots, including a five, on three ends to lead by six. Warragul closed the gap to two, but Neerim won the last four ends.

Midweek

Division two: Neerim

Newborough (2) 48/72.

Karren Sheers (skip), Di Tame, Sue Nelsun and Stephen Halligan lost to H. Grubb’s team 18/25. Scoring was tight early, and Neerim trailed 5/7 after 10 ends. Neerim dropped a disastrous six on the 13th end only to pick up a four on the next to trail by three. Newborough picked up a five to get the lead out to 12. Neerim won the last two ends.

Thelma Schroeder (skip), Marion Willis, Gerry Engelstad and Neville Cousins lost to C. Goss’ team 12/28. Neerim won the first end but lost the next seven to trail 2/11. Scoring was even over the next eight ends as Neerim closed the gap to five on the 18th end. They fell away, dropping 11 shots on the last three ends, including a six.

Pat Fraser-Aurisch (skip), Kay Cousins, Gerald Winter and Russell Meehan lost to A. Birchal’s team 18/19. Newborough scored a three on the first end followed by a five before Neerim dried up the scoring. A four on the 12th end had Neerim’s lead out to 10. In a swing, Newborough levelled on the penultimat­e end and picked up a one on the last.

Women’s pairs final

The women’s pairs final was held on Friday between Pat Fraser Aurisch/Karren Sheers and Maureen “Cookie” Halligan/Kay Cousins.

The experience­d duo of Fraser-Aurisch and Sheers settled quickly, picking up multiples including two fours and a three in the first six ends to lead 15/1.

Halligan and Cousins finally settled and picked up ones and twos. They won seven of the last nine ends of the 15-end contest but could not make up the deficit.

Fraser-Aurisch and Sheers won 19/13.
