Neerim drop to third LADDERS

With Saturday pennant paused for the Christmas season, it was down to Neerim District Bowling Club’s midweek pennant team to provide the entertainm­ent. Division two: Neerim District lost Traralgon (2) 57/66.

Karren Sheers (skip), Maureen “Cookie” Halligan, Sue Nelsun and Neville Cousins lost to J. Kirby’s team 18/27.

Traralgon had a slight lead of two after six ends before Neerim picked up a six, only to to lose a five on the next end. Scores were level at 11-all on the ninth end.

Traralgon started to get the upper hand and by the 17th end was up by 10 shots. Neerim had a brief comeback, cutting the margin to six, but Traralgon won the last two ends to win by nine shots.

Thelma Schroeder (skip), Marion Willis, Gerald Winter and Gerry Engelstad lost to M. Cartledge’s team 16/25.

Neerim had a poor start and were down 0/14 after six ends. Neerim started to settle and picked up a four on the ninth end, only to drop a four on the next end. Neerim was able to match Traralgon from then on and a four on the last end cut the final margin to nine.

Pat Fraser-Aurisch (skip), Di Tame, Kay Cousins, Gerald Winter and Jim Schroeder defeated F. Marsh’s team 23/14.

Neerim started well and were up 6/1 after three ends. Traralgon fought back to cut Neerim’s lead to two shots, but their scoring then stalled for the next five ends as Neerim got out to a 10-shot lead on the 14th end. A six and a one had the lead out to 16 on the 17th end. Traralgon then won the last four ends but finished nine shots short.

Women’s singles final

The women’s singles final was played on Wednesday between Karren Sheers and Pat Fraser-Aurisch in what was an epic battle between these two good friends.

Scoring alternated over the first four ends when the scores were four-all.

Sheers eased ahead by three, only for FraserAuri­sch to come back and lead. Sheers eased ahead again but scores were level again at 10all on the 13th and again on the 20th end at 15-all.

Neither player was able to get a break and scores were level again at 20-all on the 28th end. Fraser–Aurisch then took a three-shot lead only for Sheers to close to within one with the scores 23/22.

Both players were within sight of a win, but it was Fraser-Aurisch picking up a two on the 32nd end to win 25/22.

Men’s singles final

The men’s singles final was played on Saturday between Jim Fallon and Trevor Kuhnell, with Trevor Kuhnell taking the honours 25/21.

The initial stage of the game seemed to be one sided and although Fallon was bowling well, Kuhnell kept coming in for shot. It was 10/1 after seven ends.

Fallon started to turn the tide but was down 6/14 on the 13th end. A run of four ends straight had Fallon one shot down and by the 23rd end the scores were level at 17-all.

Kuhnell had his run of five ends and led 24/17. Fallon had not given up and trailed by three on the 30th end but it was Kuhnell who picked up one to take the game and the title.

Drouin had two wins on Tuesday in the final round of midweek pennant before the Christmas break.

Division one: Drouin 4/58 lost to Morwell Club 12/67.

Drouin played away to Morwell Club and lost overall.

Maureen Leightons team of Denise Hamilton, John Leighton and Bob Cole won 25/19. Jan Aubrey’s team of Pauline Appleyard, Graeme Aubrey and Brian Thorpe lost 15/33. Sheryl Atkinson's team of Mary Firth, Les Firth and Andrew Blaby won 18/15.

Division three: Drouin (2) 16/60 defeated Garfield 0/46.

Drouin played at home to Garfield and won. Jenny Woolard’s team of Mary Andrews, Elaine Thorpe and Lyn Rippon won 19/17. Margaret Schofield’s team of Lyn Jeffrey, Gerry Wakefield and Laurie Innes won 22/15. Margaret Rhodes’ team of Gwen Price, Trish Cole and Dini Hone won 19/14.

Division four: Drouin (3) 8/57 defeated Yinnar (2) 2/38.

Drouin played at home to Yinnar and won overall.

Maria Wans’ team of Maureen McMillan, Ian Horton and Lorraine Fox lost 23/25. Margaret Owens’ team of Irene Dawson, Andre De Waele and Ruth Waring won 29/10 to be this week’s “best rink” winners.
