Neerim jump up for fourth

Neerim District jumped from seventh to fourth on the division two ladder after a win over Traralgon on Saturday.

Division two: Neerim District defeated Traralgon (2) 104/77.

Peter Throup (skip), Pat FraserAuri­sch, Tom Goodwin and Karren Sheers defeated J. Taylor’s team 33/19.

Down 1/5 after three ends, Neerim levelled on the sixth end. A run of five straight ends, including two fours, had them up by 10 shots. Traralgon closed to within five, but Neerim then won three straight to lead by 11. Traralgon could not make any inroads and another four to Neerim helped earn a 14-shot win.

Trevor Kuhnell (skip), Rob Cook, John Rochford and Chris Hogan defeated G. McDonald’s team 20/13.

A three on the first end gave Neerim a good start. Scoring was tight for both teams after that and, after 13 ends, Neerim trailed 8/9. Scores were level at 10-all on the 16th end. Neerim managed to ease ahead 20/11 with a series of twos. Traralgon picked up consecutiv­e ones, but Neerim had the win by seven shots.

Neil Adams (skip), Ray Watts, Gerry Engelstad and Colin McKay defeated K. Garry’s team 31/15.

Neerim started well and won seven straight ends to lead 12/1 on the ninth end. Traralgon won the next two ends, but Neerim stretched the lead to 17 on the 17th end. Traralgon then hit back with a six, only for Neerim to get a five immediatel­y after that. By the 21st end, the lead was out to 19. Traralgon won three of the last four ends, but Neerim had a comfortabl­e win of 16 shots.

Shane Hogan (skip), Peter Brooks, Ross Pollard and Tony Thornton lost to D. Currie’s team 20/30.

Scoring was close early, with Neerim trailing 5/6 on the sixth end. Traralgon started to get on top, winning five of the next six ends to lead by 14 shots on the 13th end. Traralgon’s lead was still 14 on the 18th end, but Neerim started to whittle the margin back. They won four of the last seven ends but fell short by 10 shots.

Division four: Neerim District (2) lost to Newborough (3) 65/113.

With Neerim on the bottom of the table, it was always going to be a big ask to play away against top of the table Newborough. Despite this, they had one rink go down by just one shot and another rink down by just four shots.

Jim Schroeder (skip), George Rymer, Graeme Wingrove and Stephen Halligan lost to K. Evans’ team 19/20.

Neerim got off to a good start and led 6/2 after five ends. Newborough got into gear, getting a four, but scoring for both teams was tight from then on. Neerim picked up a three and a two to lead 14/11 on the 14th end. Newborough won five ones in a row but a two to Neerim had scores level at 16-all on the 20th end. Newborough eased ahead to lead by three on the penultimat­e end. A two to Neerim on the last end had them fall agonisingl­y short on the last end.

Mal Collins (skip), Gerald Winter, Ray Throup and Wes Ellis lost to S. Goss’ team 21/25.

A five on the first end had Neerim off to a great start and they led by eight on the seventh end. Neerim held their own, but Newborough started to comeback on the 13th end and hit the front. Trailing by six on the 22nd end, Neerim fought back but fell short by four shots.

Bruce Mironow (skip), Bill Cook, Des Pelly and Thelma Schroeder lost to M. Holroyd’s team 12/40.

A two on the first end gave Neerim hope before Newborough got down to business. They won eight ends, including a six and a four, to have Neerim trailing 2/22 on the ninth end. Neerim won the next four ends to trail by 12, but again Newborough hit back. They won the next eight ends, including a five, to lead by 28 on the 22nd end which they maintained to the end.

Russell Meehan (skip), Greg Bond, Di Tame and Maureen “Cookie” Halligan lost to A. Luck’s team 13/28.

Neerim got off to a disastrous start, losing the first five ends to trail 0/11. Neerim finally got on the board but could only manage to hold the margin. A four to Newborough on the 14th end was matched by Neerim on the 16th end. Scoring was tight for the rest of the game, but it was Newborough picking up most of the ones. They went on to win by 15 shots.
