With an agonising one-run loss to Bairnsdale earlier in the week, Wans said he was proud of his team for picking themselves up and making the final.

“It was a disappointing loss, it was probably the mindset, the boys have the ability which they’ve shown to get to this point. No one person is responsible for a loss, we win as a team and lose as a team, so to see their mindset change after that was great,” he said.

He also praised the work of captain Patrick Ireland, who was again a prominent player for the side, as well as young gun bowlers Carter Davis and Cam Caddy.

“I don’t like isolating particular players; I think it’s the whole team that get you into this position. But this week Patty has been great, he’s made runs including a 100 earlier, plus taken wickets as well. Carter Davis has also taken wickets for us and young Cam Caddy, who’s actually an under 14 player, was crucial with the ball at times. It was a great experience for him as a bottom age player,” he explained.

Wicketkeeper batsman Sam Fusinato said it was a great week to bond and get to know a few of the players he plays against in his local league.

“It’s been the best year by far, we’re a strong team and we’ve bonded a lot and backed each other a lot” he said. “The talk in the field was great, probably half our wickets in the last game came from the talk which shows how together we are as a team” he explained.

Despite falling short in the final, it was still a strong week for Warragul and District, finishing the tournament with victories over Leongatha and District, Sale-Maffra and Traralgon and District on their way to the final.

Showing just how strong the week was, Warragul and District players Patrick Ireland, Carter Davis and Cam Caddy were all awarded selection in the All Gippsland team, with Patrick also crowned the highest run scorer of the carnival.
