Hoskins retires after 45 years

After 45 years of service to the region’s netball leagues, Sandra Hoskins has retired from her involvement as president of the Warragul and District Indoor Netball Association.

Leading the league as president for the past 37 years, Mrs Hoskins said she felt the time was right to move on.

“I just thought that it was the right time to move on and allow some younger people to assume the role,” she said.

Mrs Hoskins began playing netball in 1968 before joining the committee in 1976. In 1979, she helped launch the very successful Monday night netball competition, which now has 90 teams participating in the league.

She also launched the Tuesday morning and Wednesday night competitions, before the association decided to split when the league grew quickly. Now, there are still nine teams competing in the league, which Mrs Hoskins says is the main thing.

“It’s great to see that it is still going after all these years, it might be a little smaller, but it’s still going and that’s a big thing,” she said.

She added that throughout her journey, she has made some lifelong friends and will be looking forward to attending more netball games in the future.

“The most enjoyable part has probably been the friendships I’ve made” she said. “I’ll still be around of course, I’m still umpiring, but I will enjoy being able to stay in touch a bit more with everyone.”

“It’s funny, I’m now umpiring the granddaughters of some of the mothers I used to play with,” she said.

Mrs Hoskins is also looking forward to passing on her many years of experience and knowledge to those throughout the region eager to learn.
