Cricket match pits campers against locals in Erica

-

When Trevor and Rebecca Closter purchased the Erica Caravan Park two years ago, they noticed that the cricket field in front of the park was unused throughout the year.

Trevor then discovered the oval had laid dormant since 1999, so the couple decided to bring it back to life.

On Australia Day, the second annual campers versus locals charity cricket match will be held, an initiative born by Trevor and Rebecca to bring the community together.

“Erica has about 160 residents, however most of them are rural and often keep to themselves, so we wanted to find a way to bring the community together,” Mrs Closter said.

Last year the first match was held, consisting of two teams of 20 players, facing 20 overs each, meaning each player gets to bat and bowl an over throughout the afternoon.

“Often life is very serious, but we make this day one that’s focused on having a laugh with everyone and a laugh at yourself, while also raising money for charity,” she said..

The match last year raised $505 for the local CFA and $235 for the McGrath Foundation, which Mrs Closter says goes a long way in a small community like Erica.

“The CFA hadn’t had a donation like that and while it’s not a big amount, it does go a long way for the volunteers there,” she said.

A plaque has been made up to commemorate the winners each year, with the campers looking to defend their title on Australia Day.

“We don’t just have Australians playing in the match, last year we actually had 11 players from England join the camper’s team, they thought there were playing in the Ashes..

“We are hoping a few more come down to enjoy the day, there is plenty on, we’ll be selling sausages, selling drinks and most importantly selling laughter along the way,” Mrs Closter said.

The local Lions club will be cooking up a barbecue, while the Erica CFA akso will attend.
