Garfield back in form

-

It was a return to winning form for Garfield’s Saturday sides this week.

Garfield’s top side went down the valley to play against Newborough. With three rinks shining, the division two team came home with a 14-shot overall win.

Division two: Garfield defeated Newborough (2) 91/77.

Nick Henwood’s rink, consisting of Gary Helmore, Joe Lenders and Ian Warren, found themselves in a scrap. They were down by four shots at the break, however, a strong showing when play resumed saw them reverse the tables to be up by four shots. They eventually turned it into a 23/18 win.

The rink of Gary Payne, Ron Saunders, Steve Bassed and skip Steve Whyte started strongly to be up by nine shots at the break. A last-ditch fight in the final three ends by their opponents reduced Garfield’s winning margin to 25/20.

Tom Cleary and his team of Stuart Gemmill, Margaret Ratcliffe and

Shane Oliver battled hard in the first half to be down by only one shot. However, they couldn’t keep up the fight and went down 13/30.

The rink of Adrian Helmuth, Barrie Smith, Alan White and skip Peter Lieshout bolted out of the blocks and were never headed, winning comprehensively 30/9.

This win catapults the division two side up to third on the ladder and back into finals contention.

Division four: Garfield (2) defeated Newborough (3) 95/89.

Garfield played host to Newborough’s side at the Garfield Arena. They took it up to the second placed side, winning a tight finish by only six shots.

Barry Johnson’s rink, consisting of Wes Goodman, Malcolm Newham and Judy Pocklington, kept with their opposition through the first half, being all square at the break. They powered home after that to win convincingly 34/19.

The rink of Alan Wilson, Damian

Brick, Helene Newton and skip Gordon Moxey was closest to the opponents at the beginning of the game. As play began, they fell steadily behind, and went on to lose 14/26.

Bob Lamport’s rink of Lexi Taylor, Peter Smith and Don Knight took it to their opposition in the first half to be four shots up at the break. A comeback by Newborough had them in front by one shot with one end to go. However, the Garfielders scored three shots on the last end to win 22/20.

The rink of Frank Prins, Brian Fox, Graeme Burton and skip Rod James started slowly to be down by five at the break. They staged a revival in the second half to be all-square with one end to go. With his last bowl, Rod drew into the jack to steal the game by one shot, winning 25/24.

The side remains in fourth place on the ladder, with games against the fifth and sixth placed teams in the last two rounds of the regular completion. An exciting finish to the season is assured
