Neerim hang in against top team

Neerim District’s division two side played away against top of the ladder Moe.

Neerim trailed by just four shots at the break but couldn’t hold on in the second half.

Division two: Neerim District lost to Moe 79/107.

Peter Throup (skip), Pat Fraser-Aurisch, Jim Fallon and Karren Sheers defeated E. Kuklinsky’s team 26/15.

Neerim had a great start and dominated the first half of the game. They picked up several twos and threes to lead 20/4 on the 12th end. From then, scoring was tight as both teams only managed singles, except a three to Neerim immediatel­y followed by a three to Moe. Moe won five of the last seven ends but only managed singles, as Neerim won by 11 shots.

Angus McGillivra­y (skip), Trevor Kuhnell, Rob Cook and Chris Hogan lost to A. Caines’ team 19/29.

Neerim had a good start and led 6/1 after four ends. Moe got on a roll and won eight of the next 10 ends, including several threes and a four to see Neerim trail 9/19 on the 14th end. Neerim fought back to within five shots on the 19th end, but Moe kicked again. A four on the 23rd end had Moe’s lead out to 12. Neerim won the last two ends, but could only manage singles, and went down by 10 shots.

Neil Adams (skip), Ray Watts, Greg Bond and Colin McKay lost to S. Caines’ team 19/32.

Scoring was close early, with a four giving Neerim a five-shot lead on the eighth end. Moe picked up eight shots on the next three ends, but a three to Neerim on the 12th end had scores tied at 12-all. Moe again picked up seven shots in three ends, only for Neerim to get two threes to be 18/19. That marked the end of Neerim’s challenge. They only picked up one single in the last eight ends as Moe won by 13.

Shane Hogan (skip), Peter Brooks, Julie Adams and Tony Thornton lost to J. Leech’s team 15/31.

Moe settled quickly as Neerim found themselves trailing 3/9 on the fifth end. Neerim held its own and got back to 11/14 on the 14th end. However, Moe then took control, winning nine of the last 11 ends - including seven shots in two ends – to win by 16 shots.

Division four: Neerim District (2) lost to Traralgon (4) 81/100.

Playing at home, Neerim found itself playing a game between bottom of the ladder versus top of the ladder on Saturday.

Despite the difference in ladder positions, all four Neerim teams were competitiv­e as the side went down by only 19 shots.

Jim Schroeder (skip), Bill Cook, Bruce Mironow and Stephen Halligan lost to J. Garling’s team 18/26.

Things looked grim for Neerim when they only won four of the first 17 ends to trail by 17 shots. However, Neerim staged a creditable comeback by winning six of the eight remaining ends - including a five - but went down by eight shots.

Mal Collins (skip), Ray Throup, Gerald Winter and Wes Ellis drew with P. Trewin’s team 21/21.

This was a close game from start to finish, with neither side getting a break. A five on the 16th end gave Neerim a six-shot lead. Traralgon started to peg back the margin and drew level at 19-all on the 22nd end. Neerim got a two only for Traralgon to pick up two singles to draw the game.

Ross Pollard (skip), Tom Goodwin, Graeme Wingrove and Neville Cousins lost to T. Colwell’s team 21/26.

Scoring was tight early with Neerim leading 6/5 after eight ends. The game continued to be close with only one shot the difference on the 16th end. Traralgon finally broke clear, winning five of the next seven ends - including several multiples and a five - to lead by 13 on the 23rd end. Neerim picked up two fours to finish five-shots down.

Russell Meehan (skip), George Rymer, John Rochford and Maureen “Cookie” Halligan lost to M. Cross’ team 21/27.

Neerim had a slow start but drew level at four-all on the fifth, only to drop a four on the next end. Traralgon eased ahead but Neerim came back to draw level and then get a five on the 12th end. Neerim led 17/13 on the 15th end, before Traralgon won five ends in a row to lead by four. Neerim closed the gap to two on the 21st end, only for Traralgon to win the next three ends. Neerim won the last end but fell short by six shots.

Neerim District bowlers Pat FraserAuri­sch and Karren Sheers teamed up with Traralgon bowlers Lucy Dalli and Di Richards to win the WGBD Women’s State Fours competitio­n on Sunday.

The quartet won their way into the final
