Garfield start strong

-

Midweek pennant resumed this week, back from the Christmas break, and Garfield was ready for it.

Garfield’s Div 3 side played host to Warragul this week, in what was a significant game for the final layout of the ladder. With only seven points between Garfield in first place and Warragul in third, this clash could see a huge change in the standings.

Garfield started slowly but came home strong with an overall win by a total of 68 shots to 51.

Marg Ratcliffe’s rink, of Bob Lamport, Jill Rouse and Sue Stansfield, started slowly and were down by seven shots halfway through the game, but then hit their straps and came home quickly to win 20 shots to 18.

The rink of Barrie Smith, Isabel Deane, Lexi Taylor and skip Maureen Lamport didn’t wait until halfway through the match to get behind, they were eight shots down after only eights ends.

The next three ends saw them score the eight shots they needed to square the game by halfway, before they powered away to win by 27 shots to 15.

Judy Pocklington’s rink, consisting of Gillian Harper, Garry Salomons and Jan Johnson bolted out of the blocks and were eight shots up after only six ends.

They then stopped dead in their tracks and by halfway were six shots down. After that, a concerted comeback had them level pegging with one end to go, getting home with three shots on the final end to win 21 shots to 18.

This very good win keeps the side in first place on the ladder. However, as Garfield has the bye next, Morwell, who is only five points behind in second will look to pass them, making the last two weeks of the season critical to the team for their final result.

There was no Saturday pennant this week because of the Australia Day weekend.
