Longwarry’s mixed fortunes

Longwarry’s two sides travelled to Traralgon on Saturday with one remarkable year coming to an end and the other earning a grand final spot.

Both division one and division six travelled to Traralgon to take on Newborough sides for a grand final place.

Division one’s remarkable year came to an end at the hands of Newborough who convincing­ly won by 45 shots. Division six will play Churchill in the grand final after defeating Newborough by 10 shots.

Division one: Longwarry lost to Newborough 71/116.

Glenn Pask, Grant Pask, Jason Lieshout and Slim Eastwell (skip) lost to Paul Sherman’s team 20/23.

In a close game all day with several lead changes, scores were all tied up at 20-all going into the last end. Unfortunat­ely

for Longwarry, Newborough picked up three shots to win by that margin.

Elio Meggetto, Judy Eastwell, Hank Metselaar and Barry White (skip) lost to Alan Grubb’s team 13/35.

The Longwarry team were outplayed by the better team on the day with Newborough winning by 22 shots.

Ken White, Simon Counsel, Kenneth Towt and John McCarthy (skip) lost to Nosha Michael’s team 26/19.

Longwarry got off to a great start, winning the first six ends to lead 10/0. Newborough won the next seven ends to lead by one shot at the break. In the second half of the game, Newborough picked up a couple of fours to really hurt Longwarry who lost by seven shots.

Brian Hennessy, Mark Serong, Ian Peterson and Russell White (skip) lost to Kevin Lovett’s team 19/32.

Longwarry was down by 16 shots at the break and looking at a big defeat. To their credit, the team won seven of the last 11 ends to lose by 13 shots.

Division six: Longwarry (2) defeated Newborough (5) 46/36.

Reg Dunn, Ron Sutton, Frank Hone and Vicki Hanks (skip) lost 17/24.

Newborough started off well, picking up good numbers and leading by 12 shots at the main break. Longwarry reeled back the margin to only lose by seven and help the overall result.

Graham Hanks, Sean Garrity, Eddie Bluck and Gerard “Hogg” Mitchell (skip) won 29/12.

Longwarry controlled this rink all day with the “Hogg” leading his team from the front. They scored a convincing 17-shot win and a berth in the grand final.
