Celebrating art of Dunera boy
WAS Gallery in Warragul is celebrating the life and artwork of the late Hans Lorraine with exhibition “Artist, Architect and Dunera Boy” now open.
This display has been created outlining Hans’ experience as a child from a Jewish family in Nazi Germany. It covers his escape at 13years-old, on his own, to an English school and then transportation on the HMT Dunera, along with 2200 others, as enemy aliens of Britain.
The voyage has been documented in several books and a film, describing a cruel trip and controversial British Government decision. Eventually, the Dunera docked at Sydney and refugees were interned in camps at Hay and Tathra.
From this voyage and camps came many celebrated people. Aged 17, Hans was influenced by their skills, talents and knowledge.
Many made Australia their permanent home; Hans was one of them.
The WAS Gallery exhibition shows the oil and watercolour painting of Hans from over the decades.
He studied architecture at the University of Melbourne, before working full-time from 1950 to 1998. Through the years, he painted and created his own furniture. After retirement, his painting became prolific.
His style and subjects reflect European influences but are grounded in Australia.
Visit WAS Gallery for the story and artwork of Hans Lorraine (1923 to 2012) at 37 Latrobe
