Crows give girls opportunity to fly
On Tuesday night, three of the newest members of the Longwarry Cricket Club received their ‘baggy crow’ from club president Geoff Rumble.
Erin Maxwell, Cadence Walker and Grace Lewis have joined the club for the 2020/21 season, which will see an all-women’s side entered for the first time in Division 5.
Committee member Noel Pullen said that having the girls join the club is a real coup for Longwarry.
“It’s a great opportunity, we’ve spent a lot of time at the club turning the culture around and this fits in really nicely in our family club mentality, it’s unique and the girls have tremendous drive to jump through the grades,” he said.
After Erin Maxwell and her mother Narelle approached the club with the idea of forming an all-women’s side, Longwarry were more than happy to abide, launching the endeavour at a function held at the Warragul Downtowner, which saw many members of the cricket club come out in support.
President Geoff Rumble spoke to the audience, as did Narelle Maxwell, touching on the contribution Christine Connelly had to local women’s cricket in the area as the first female cricketer in the WDCA.
Erin, Cadence and Grace were then presented with their Longwarry caps and officially welcomed to the club, before sharing some of their journey through the junior cricket ranks as female players.
Currently, the team has around nine confirmed players, with four others interested for season 2020/21 but are always looking for more. If you’re interested, please contact Narelle Maxwell for more information on 0438 065 528.
