Working from home
Homes have been turned into offices as COVID-19 forces people to leave their usual work environment.
For Cardinia Shire’s learning and organisational development consultant Kath Stephenson it isn’t unusual.
Kath has been working from her Warragul home off and on for some time.
Under the present conditions her unit of 10s has divided into several workplaces to ensure they comply with current regulations and stay fit and healthy.
Two weeks ago Kath was at home, while last week she worked from the Cardinia Cultural Centre.
Kath has tips for novice at home workers.
Her main advice is to structure your day.
“Make sure you get dressed and don’t work in your pyjamas.
“Try to stick to the same routine as in the workplace. Get your work done before you look at other jobs around the house.”
Kath said breaks are important and she recommends they be the same as in the workplace; usually morning and afternoon as well as lunchtime.
“On your breaks get up and walk around. If the weather is okay go outside and get some fresh air.”
Kath said the workplace set up was critically important with good work desk and suitable chair and good lighting.
Cardinia has a check list to ensure that staff meet all occupational and health and safety guidelines.
Kath suggests if the arrangements are hurried staff can video their at home work environment so that they meet standards and changes can be advised.
Kath said there were many benefits, the most important for her cutting out travel time which can be an hour and a half when she is based at Officer.
Cardinia also has in place a buddy system to ensure everyone stays in touch and doesn’t feel isolated. They also use video conferencing for team meetings.
